Why are bedrolls a thing in this game?
Why are they in the game? When your in an enemy base you can just cut down a tree and make a bed on the spot, same goes for rescuing events. I would rather spend the wool on carpets and arm chairs instead of something that can be made out of wood...

Generally, except for the early game, I have more textiles than I know what to do with (sometimes more so than wood, depending on the biome), so making bedrolls for caravaning isn't such a big deal.

I agree double bedrolls are pretty niche though.

There is a mod that allows use of bedrolls while resting on caravan, and if your raiders have a bedroll in inventory when its time to sleep after a battle, they will drop the bedroll and sleep in it rather than on the ground. While you can also claim enemy beds, maybe you destroyed their whole base and the map has no trees... They also have a better tend bonus than a makeshift sleeping spot in an emergency situation. They are also useful for nomadic or tribal playthroughs.

All sorts of reasons...

Because carrying a wooden double bed on your shoulders makes for a very slow caravan?

And sleeping in the snow on caravan *without* any bed is very unproductive.

You don't need a mod to sleep in bedrolls in caravan. It's a vanilla feature.

Yeah, I re-read what I posted and though I know that's a mod I have there must be more to it than that, or maybe it covered up a time when bedrolls weren't used automatically? I dunno...

Its been so long since I played vanilla I really have no idea what's normal anymore.

Also, Tribals don't start with Complex Furniture, so they cannot build beds out-of-the-box. They can build bedrolls, however, which can be useful so that you're not stuck sleeping on Sleeping Spots until you get research up and running.

Keeps your colonists on caravan more 'comfortable' when sleeping in a bedroll vs the ground. No Mod Required.

bedrolls also improve the movement speed of your caravan when you are carrying a downed colonist or prisoner. This is incredibly useful, because without that it takes forever for a caravan to get back home after an enemy lands a lucky shot on one of your best colonists during a mission.

Bedrolls are for caravans in vanilla. They help in resting rate and mood while on the road. The higher quality the better.

Don't caravan without them. They help a lot.

The tutorial also does not tell you that food goes in the mouth.
The tutorial also does not tell you that gravity keeps things on the floor.

Wait what? Caravan moving faster because of bedrolls isn't obvious at all. The amount of stuff you can carry with you while a caravan member is hurt doesn't change before and after he gets hurt so it is logical to assume he goes by himself and is NOT carried by smb else. Therefore it doesn't make too much sense that having somebody have a bedroll while he is GOING makes a caravan faster.

Logic got thrown out the window the first time one of your colonists freaked out because there wasn't a table in his or her immediate vicinity.

Part of the fun of RW is finding all the little things you would never expect. You have to experiment with everything to understand what you can and cannot do and how everything works.
