Beyond the game's messages of "There are approximately 6 guards, 4 turrets, and a mortar" for enemy base locations, I believe that's about as much scouting as you get. I'm unsure if enemy bases remain static on the map or if a new one is rolled up for each encounter.
They will only storm your closest soldier.
So when enemy is very close, run away with that side only! As soon as you hit the world map, re-join the fight. You will appear at a mostly random edge of the ongoing fight.
