What's the deal with IED traps
When you go to place them there is like area outlined with the trap in the middle. Is that like the trigger area? Like if someone goes in that area they explode? idk, I don't get it.

The ring is the blast radius. The trigger is the IED itself.

Okay, then that makes sense. Don't know why I didn't think of that. Also means I have been placing them wrong. Well you can't really place them wrong I was just assuming that was the trigger range for some reason. Just need to place some closer together to be an effective barrier.

You can try to funnel raiders into a specific location/path to help ensure they hit IEDs. Place some walls in a fashion that pushes them toward the mines.

You can, but they tend to adapt to it after the first blast and it doesn't hurt them, it just stuns them so if you're not ready to follow up then its a waste. I find it best to hit the ship from range with a mortar and either kite them with a sniper rifle and a fast moving pawn, or let them run through my killbox/maze.
