Mountain Base: keeping natural walls
Going to start my first mountain base and I would like to keep as much natural (polished) stone walls as possible by planning everything out from the get go, because I like the idea. Question is, are there any major threats to the integrity of my walls that I should be aware of? Like explosions for example: if my battery room blows up, can it destroy my natural walls for good? Are there any workarounds or mods that can deal with that?

Also feel free to share any other general tip for mountain bases, as I'm trying to gather as much info as possible before starting, to avoid complications down the road.

Exploding batteries, gunfire, tantrum mental breaks, insect infestations, Sapper raiders, grenades.
And above all the greatest risk to your neat layout is a brief mental slip by yourself.

You might possibly get together a collection of mods and settings that would disable *all* of these eventualities, but frankly your best bet is to accept that your design will be somewhat dynamic.

or you could try this, it used to work just fine, don't know if it got updated to 1.0

Once those natural walls get destroyed there's no getting them back without mods. Anything can be a threat to them. Sappers and infestations will probably deal the most damage if you don't handle them in time.

I don't know, I like to deal with the problems that come with it, I just don't like problems that don't have a workable solution. For sappers for example I've read they don't bother digging if you keep your rooms at a certain distance (12 tiles?) from the border of the mountain, so that shouldn't be an issue for my base.

I already have that mod but the game flags it as incompatible with 1.0, and as I undestand it those walls wouldn't keep the same hp of the original ones, which would kinda bug me anyway.

I can't believe no one tried to mod a solution to this issue since it appears to me as the main appeal of a mountain base. Worst case scenario I could just use the Dev Mode, but I wouldn't mind something more... balanced to work with.

This mod allows you to build stone walls & smooth them.. Same with rough flooring. Does more than that... It's the only mod I know of that actually implements it correctly. Look into description as you can change values if you desire in mod settings. I haven't mess with the advanced tech like the emitter,but it does a good job in everything I've tried so far IMO.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, thank you! Seems like I didn't search hard enough.

Hope this'll fix all my terrain-related problems (seems like I won't be able to tell for a while since it needs some advanced research from the looks of things).

I hope so too. It definitely fixed mine lol.

In case you want it to take stone-blocks instead of chunks, paste in mod settings.

Granite|BlocksGranite(10);Limestone|BlocksLimestone(10);Marble|BlocksMarble(10);Slate|BlocksSlate(10);Sandstone|BlocksSandstone(10);

Feel free to change (10) to lower number if you want it to accept fewer stones.

I have yet to see an exploding battery or a tantrum break a stone wall, whether it was natural or constructed. Does this really happen?

Terraform Rimworld is excellent for a mountain base plan, especially when your miners discover a vast hidden chamber or ruin right in the middle of your floorplan. It can go too far, though... I recently researched to the top of its tree just to see what the replicator was all about, and its silly OP. You might also check out More Planning mod for layout purposes. Adds colors and the ability to turn planning on and off.

The guy that made Treeaform RW also has some pretty great other mods for undergrounders as well, just search for SZ and you can get more terrain types (like lava floor) really fancy stone floor types and more types of stone to play with

Better safe than sorry. They're pretty sturdy but I guessed it would happen sooner or later.

@Jibbles Thanks again.

@Preechr Thanks, I'll definitely check out those mods.

Once im found a large opening, while im mined out the main corridor of my mountain base. It was .... LAAAAARGE (99% of the map was mountain, only a small grassland on the west side).This openning was around 30*30 tiles or stg like that, with rich soil, small pond, etc... ... Covered with mountains.
That was a realy nice game. :D :D (Bit op... 120% safe from almost all hostile events)
Before questions: I dont remember the seed and the coords.

The quarry mod includes a super OP exploit that can be useful for finding maps like those. Quarries don't require research, so you can build one right after landing. When you go to place a quarry, it will highlight all hidden voids or ruins inside mountain or hill areas. I always keep that mod loaded just for the times where the game will throw you a quest on a mountainous map where the building you need is completely hidden in rock or to troubleshoot raiders appearing in hidden areas/getting stuck on mountain maps.
