Did you have it in a stockpile zone?

300 gold isn't enough for a sculpture.

Gold and silver are special "light" material, it takes 10x the normal amount to make statues out of them. (So you need 500 gold for a small statue.)

i actually just saw that before reading this. That sucks, a lot. Made some steel ones instead. unfortunately, my mining guy got snatched in a big raid, bu i got a good stockpile. Also tamed a bear, who has single tanked a couple more since. Just waiting for useful pawns to come to me now.

Marble is particularly good for sculptures if you have any on the map.

300 gold is enough to make a size 30 statue. i.e. 2/3 of a small sculpture.

Yep, once you have a significant amount of wealth saved up, buy gold (I like to buy jade, too) at every opportunity that arises. ABC? (Always Buy Components) More like ABG.

Use fancy materials for sculptures you intend to use for their decorative/beauty value and when you're purposefully trying to increase the value of your colony.

When creating sculptures for "sale," use wood. You'll get much more use out of it and much more value per return. Have your sculptor skill up on wood before risking bad results with expensive or rare materials.

... not gonna lie, I never thought of making wood sculptures because I didn't think the sculpture would be worth the labor investment, but using it to level art IS a good idea if you're on a map with abundant wood (or one where you at least have fertile ground for tree sowing.)

I'll be sure to try that in the future!

Thing is, wood is free of all cost except labor. And not much of that. (assuming your local climate agrees). Indeed, in jungle, temperate forest, and sometimes in boreal forest one ends up with a surplus of wood simply from clearing ground for buildings&crops&firebreaks.

Wood statues are fast to make, light to transport, and sell very well. The *main* complaint I have against them is the manual effort of clicking on each sale one.item.at.a.time.

If it helps, try thinking of gold / silver in the form of coins - whereas steel is in the form of bars / ingots.
If a steel sculpture required 50 bars, then it would require more than 50 coins worth of gold to craft a similarly sized sculpture. :-)
