The game window is off the screen
Hello,

By wanting to launch Rimworld, the game window is off the screen and it is on the right because when I move the mouse to the right off the screen and I hold the left click while moving the mouse to the left, at times I have the gray slider of the game. Now it does not do it to me anymore.

-I did all the tricks possible with research on sites and videos. Right-clicking on the game window in the taskbar does not do anything, I do not have the choices like restore, move ... By doing that it just removes the small window of the taskbar while leaving the open game (though I have the sound of the game).

-I did ALT + TAB to see all the windows open and I see the main menu of the game but by clicking on it with left click, right, nothing does, it just shifts the windows left or right.

-I did Windows + Shift + arrow on the window of the game in the taskbar and it does nothing.

-I did right click on the taskbar by putting the Show desktop and then right click again on the taskbar to put Show open windows and you know the rest: it does not matter.

How to do it, please? It does sometimes when I run another game and when I close it I have my open windows that have left the screen on the right but I can always replace them with right click on the window of the taskbar and set crop and then I move with the left arrow. I'm even used to it. But here I still can not put the window of the Rimworld when I have the sound and I see the main menu when I do ALT + TAB.

I thank you in advance for your help.
Cordially.

If you are able to go to the options menu in-game I would see if going full screen normalizes things. Check that your resolution is set appropriately there, also.

If you are not able to even get to the options menu from the game you can change the fullscreen toggle and resolution from the "Prefs.xml" file located here:

C:\Users\*username*\AppData\LocalLow\Ludeon Studios\RimWorld by Ludeon Studios\Config

You want "Prefs.xml" in that config folder and look in the gobbledygoop for "Fullscreen".

Change the "Fullscreen" line to:
<fullscreen>True</fullscreen>

"Resolution Height" and "Resolution Width" are there, too, but I would just change fullscreen and then check resolution in-game.

I thank you for your very complete message.

I got the file "Prefs.xml" but I do not have a line with "Fullscreen". Here's what I have in it :

Such a polite post from someone called ToxicGamer.

What version of Windows are you using?

Try this: Use Alt+Tab to select the RimWorld window, Press Alt + Space keys together on the keyboard to open the window menu. You won't see it, but it should open up. Now, press M . The mouse cursor will move to the title bar of the window and turn into a cross with arrows. You won't see this happen either, but it should do this. Don't touch the mouse. Use the left, right, up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to move your window back onto your main screen.

Once its visible, grab the handle at the top with your mouse and put it where you want it. If you want to stay in windowed mode, get the window positioned correctly and then close the game. Windows will (usually) remember where a window was when you last closed it and reopen it there.

That's interesting.
You can verify the game files through Steam if you haven't already. That will replace game files that are missing/incomplete/damaged.
Right click Rimworld in Steam-Properties-Local Files-Verify Integrity.

Here is my "Prefs.xml" if you want to do some experimenting.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<PrefsData>
<volumeGame>0.8</volumeGame>
<volumeMusic>0.6687658</volumeMusic>
<volumeAmbient>1</volumeAmbient>
<screenWidth>1920</screenWidth>
<screenHeight>1080</screenHeight>
<fullscreen>True</fullscreen>
<uiScale>1</uiScale>
<customCursorEnabled>True</customCursorEnabled>
<hatsOnlyOnMap>True</hatsOnlyOnMap>
<plantWindSway>True</plantWindSway>
<showRealtimeClock>False</showRealtimeClock>
<animalNameMode>TameNamed</animalNameMode>
<extremeDifficultyUnlocked>True</extremeDifficultyUnlocked>
<adaptiveTrainingEnabled>False</adaptiveTrainingEnabled>
<preferredNames />
<resourceReadoutCategorized>True</resourceReadoutCategorized>
<runInBackground>False</runInBackground>
<edgeScreenScroll>False</edgeScreenScroll>
<temperatureMode>Fahrenheit</temperatureMode>
<autosaveIntervalDays>1</autosaveIntervalDays>
<testMapSizes>False</testMapSizes>
<maxNumberOfPlayerSettlements>1</maxNumberOfPlayerSettlements>
<pauseOnLoad>True</pauseOnLoad>
<pauseOnUrgentLetter>True</pauseOnUrgentLetter>
<devMode>False</devMode>
<langFolderName>English</langFolderName>
<logVerbose>False</logVerbose>
<pauseOnError>False</pauseOnError>
<resetModsConfigOnCrash>True</resetModsConfigOnCrash>
</PrefsData>

Edit: Oh, Preechr's post above is great advice. Try that first to re-center your window before changing game files!

If OP has never been able to see the screen, it may be that he/she's never been able to set up fullscreen or ratio. Should be able to just add those lines in, though.

Your mouse goes *off screen* to the right? This means its not just the game, but windows itself that believes you have more floorspace offscreen right.

Just plug in the second monitor you have forced your graphics card to acknowledge.
If you have misplaced your second monitor, then just stop forcing your graphics card to override itself into a second screen.(normally detecting absence of second monitor will have fixed this)

I am on W10 and several years ago during my first games I was with the 8 and I had no problem. And there, by reinstalling it this time on Windows 10, I have this problem.

I did exactly as your messages (which I thank you for your help) and still nothing. This is the only game that does this to me on hundreds. M.K., I have never put a second monitor, that's what is strange :/

I do not know if it's important but when I right click on the game icon in the taskbar, it says "RimWorldWin64.exe". Is it normal that it is in 64?

Steam provides you with the 64 bit version if you have 64 bit Windows installed. If you have 32 bit windows installed, Steam will provide you with the 32 bit version.

If you are playing from the ludeon website version, it is whichever version you downloaded.

Oh yes I just saw and I'm good at 64. The game I bought it on Steam. I uninstalled it and put it back but still the same worry. Very strange !

If all else fails and you want to experiment you can try adding these lines to that "Prefs.xml" file and see what it does (if your resolution is different than 1920x1080 then change it accordingly):

<screenWidth>1920</screenWidth>
<screenHeight>1080</screenHeight>
<fullscreen>True</fullscreen>

If it doesn't help then you can just delete them back out. My hope is that it will give you fullscreen and solve this weird window placement.

You may also consider checking your Windows10 display settings and make sure the set resolution matches your monitor.
Preechr Oct 22, 2019 @ 7:26am
What's the resolution on your monitor?
ToxicNight Oct 22, 2019 @ 7:33am
My screen is 1920x1080. I will try this then, thank you for your messages ;)
ToxicNight Oct 22, 2019 @ 7:34am
These lines :

<screenWidth>1920</screenWidth>
<screenHeight>1080</screenHeight>
<fullscreen>True</fullscreen>

are not in the file "Prefs.xml", I add them by making a copy paste ?
TwoTonGamer Oct 22, 2019 @ 7:36am
Yes, you got it, copy/paste. You won't break anything because if it doesn't work you can just delete them back out.

Also, you might check that your Windows10 display settings are at 1920x1080 resolution to match your monitor.
