Is your colonist incapable of violence? If so, then he/she can't equip weapons.

Okay, figured it out. Some mods where in the wrong order.

I only have the "Prepare Carefully" mod installed but it doesn't matter if it is first or last in the mod load order (and even no mods); I still can't equip a weapon and my character is violence-capable.

I had this problem in the regular game until I realized the colonist had his arms blown off.. :)

Actually it does matter for some mods, they need to be first or at least before dependent mods.

Some mods, perhaps, but not for this mod at that time.

True, prepare carefully is not causing problems. It was another mod and sadly I never figured out which one, I just placed all mods that had other mods depending on them first in load order. That worked just fine.
Can I just say... I am impressed. This topic is almost 2 years old and was necrod... BUT, better yet, 2 people who had posted almost 2 years ago, ALSO posted today lol!

hello from 2021! idk if it was the same mods, but I found that it was me loading dual wield before hugslib, which seems like it would cause a problem with holding weapons. Reordering the loading fixed it, like you said it would. so to anyone reading this, if you have the dual wield mod (and you need hugslib for it) save yourself some time and go strait to those two mods.

I have this issue as well, but I have no mods and one of my colonist is a marine so she should be ready for violence
