how to defend on flat maps?
I usially choose maps with moutains but that is because I can't figure out how to defend all four directions? I tried to build walls and put turrets outside of them and sandbags but I can never get all that set up before I get overrun. tips for early game defence on flat maps?

I am a mountain cave digger kind of player myself (I know, too easy...), but I would recon you need to change your style to be more agressive and head out to ambush/face raiders, etc. Play it more like a tactical squad game.

I was thinking maybe use bunkers in key positions arround my base and clearing all the area of rocks and trees.

On a flat map, you just need to get behind your defenses. So you want to position your guns in such a way as the can be aimed in all directions
Zoom in on the very center of this image, you will see the, "central castle" in this base. This castle is in the center of the base and can fire in all directions.

Usually I will have the guns inside manned and may have a colonist lead the enemy to the castle if they're not going there to begin with.

Or at all. Steadily learning on rough chillax game get all my makeshift troopers behind some sandbags preparing for a raid. Their aim is horrid but I clean house np with my bows and couple rifles. Then out of nowhere an assassin with rocket launcher one shots my whole colony lol damn... How do you survive assassins with rocket launchers.... Too bad that was cool spot had valley V with choke at opposite end melee sit behind entrance jump the shot up enemies.

that is why I love mountain bases. I build my kill box so that the distance between the enemy and me is so far that they will have to fight through turrets before they ever get to me. flat maps this is impossible.

My goal was to force the enemies in the close space where i can shoot em from 3 sides. Also i have doors so i can hide if they overrun me and kite them. If they dont come where i want em, i send one colonist take one shot at the enemy, this usually makes them to follow him in.
Also u can kite with 2 squads with 4,5 man in each.
Greetings

I see, they see the cover in the middle and think to hide there while they get shot from both sides. very nice.
One question though; why and HOW do you have so many dead Muffalo?

clear nature around you (trees, rocks)
build some 1x1 walls for cover over the place.
micro manage a bit and reposition to other 1x1 walls if needed.
always pick the most threat first (rocket launcher, grenades etc)
slaughter the charging enemies.

no killbox or turret spam needed. (makes it boring anyways)

@OP

Just intelligently build bunkers with doors where needed.

You can watch the enemy status so far as Moving, or Looking for targets.

Then just stand in the doorway and fire at the enemies in a quick burst, and when they switch from moving to trying to shoot at you, quickly move back into the bunker.

Then when they switch from Looking for targets, move back out and shoot them once more.

You will want to design your bunkers so that when they run to a bunker to attack a door etc, you have another manned bunker in a position to flank the enemies attacking the first bunker.

That causes the enemies to run back and forth between bunkers and allows you to ping pong them to death.

If you do it correctly and design them well, you dont even need to build a single turret the entire game.
