Which mod are you talking about?

They are rewards for doing 'quests'. You'll get a message popup saying go somewhere to pick up the item, it might be dangerous, blah blah.

Send a caravan before timer expires and make sure you can carry the item back.

It's in the same pool of items such as the infinite chem reactor, so the chance of getting the quest with the item you want is quite low.
oh ok

They only provide 500 power. Don't go too out of your way to try and find one.

Actually despite that it's perfect for underground drilling and moving locations

It does have it's uses, but it's not worth a 30 day caravan to a huge battle where you might cripple or lose some of your best fighters. If it's very close and you are willing to reload if it's a ****storm, it's a neat little device.

transport pods

I haven't really felt that the mobility of the Vanometric Cell helps much. I much prefer the utility of the Infinite Chem Reactor. Not only can it produce enough Chem Fuel for two generators (albeit taking 600W itself), later on you can use it to shore up artillery shell production.

Now, if you got both, that'd be awesome, because the VC could mostly power the Chem reactor itself.

I do agree that it's hard to consider it worth the risk of looting it if your pawns aren't geared. Also, if everyone's in base and saving up steel for your ship or crafting weapons/armour, I'm likely to pass on the pod trip.

But the quest themselves tend to pop when you've already got a caravan going. Which then becomes a question of if there's enough food for a detour. It's a luxury item, like carpet IMO.

Carpet is quite easy to come by, though.

If you don't want to risk the trip for the vanometric power source, you could also use one of the many portable power cell mods available.

One of the ones I like to use is this portable power item
