An alternative is the Setup Camp mod. It allows you to make a camp in another tile, which can basically become another colony, usually a supply colony. The main difference, I think, is that events won't happen in this camp colony, whereas with vanilla multiple colonies, *I think* they would all experience events, including raids. Someone can confirm this if they have tried multiple colonies.
Also, I'm not sure if each colony will be able to get its own set of 10 or 20 colonists (up to the population max). Someone can confirm this if they have tried multiple colonies.
I know with the camp mod, you have the same set of colonists, since it's not quite treated as a different colony. In other words, you are splitting up your work force and defense force, without necessarily getting more colonists, if you go make camps into other tiles.
Just recently I happened across a Rimworld live stream on youtube where the dude had max colonies (5) going at the same time. Some of the colonies had like 15-20 people and others had 4-8 people. That would make my brain esplode...
Then you can choose pawns and items that sould leave the map and go exploring...
