Does weapon material matter?
One of my colonists got stabbed in the brain and somehow survived but died from infection of the brain. As far as I can tell he was stabbed by a steel shiv, which I would assume is a very basic weapon other than if you made a shiv out of wood or stone (everyone seems to have steel shivs)

This made me wonder if any weapon could cause that much damage no matter what it is made of (I guess guns don't matter because they are all made from the same stuff)

Weapon material changes the damage and speed of the weapon. If you inspect a material, like steel, you will see what it's modifiers are when used as a crafting material.

I kind of more meant if the material meant anything for doing special stuff like that.

Like if the shiv was made of wood, do you think it still would of been able to stab the brain through the skull?

Yes, it could. Hitting subsurface layers is just a chance on attack. (There may be a minimum damage, in which case a wooden shiv might coincidentally not be able to meet it, but that isn't a special property of steel per se.)

think you need to deal a minimum amount of damage to then also hit internal orders
so a wooden shiv might not have enough damage to do brain damage
but not sure

Ok I guess that makes sense. I had another situation where one of my colonists went berserk and punched the colony's bear so hard he cracked its rib somehow. He did that with no weapon so I guess internal damage is just a background roll or something.

bones and organs are in a different catigory tho
rpgfreakiod Dec 3, 2017 @ 12:18am
Ya but how would punching even count for material, would it be no material or some special calculation? I assume you can't stab organs with a punch, but you might be able to crush them.
Ashardalon Dec 3, 2017 @ 12:27am
no, you can at worst cause cracks in bones
you cant damage organs with punches
not even bionics can do that
tho they do have higher damage so its more likely they break bones then regular fists that usually just bruise
they have a static damage value dealing blunt damage with an option to rip of things like fingers and ears
rpgfreakiod Dec 3, 2017 @ 12:32am
Ok so what can be damaged depends more on the weapon type rather than the material? I thought it was divided by damage types like slash and blunt.
Ashardalon Dec 3, 2017 @ 12:44am
yes weapon type determines damage type

there is blunt like fists clubs a beer bottle or a wood log
they do blunt damage
the material for those increase blunt damage
they dont pierce, they never cause bleeding wounds so are restricted to bruises cracks and breaks and never cause organ damage
unless when they do enough damage to a limb to destroy it completely
that is why fingers are often lost in fist fights and why clubs sometimes still decapitate
0hp on a limb is the limb removed and fingers and neck are bodyparts that have low hp and no armor that protects them

then there is piercing
like guns bows and sharp pointy things
they rarely do damage like cracks but often cause bleeding wounds
they generally cause less pain but more real damage, pain being the main way to down people with blunt weapons making them good for capturing
how piercing damage works im not completely sure
i think there is a minimum damage needed to hit organs after hitting a limb or body but its hard to test

lastly there are burns, they burn, with burny things usually
its pure skinn damage, no cracks in bones and no organ damage, but i think it might be able to damage eyes, not sure
causes a lot of pain and is the most likely to scarr but has no way to cause internal damage or dismember

The neck is weak, huh? I wonder if that explains why my colonists seem to like eating the head first when eating corpses?
