RimWorld

kidnapping is garbage
you can't see it happen over the crowd of killers,
you send someone rescue, but there is simply no way to get there in time
the kidnapper often has a shield belt so you cannot shoot them down
the raiders are right next to the ede of the map more often than not anyways
i would rather the colonist die so i don't feel nearly as guilty when i don't have the manpower to stage a rescue mission
toxic fallout makes it a problem to stay out and fight anyways

the game tells u that the raiders decide to just take who they can and y are ur ppl near the edge of the map with a raid? surely this cant happen often

well my building is pretty big and not at all smack dab in the middle of the map. a lot of my defenses are out away from the main base to leave room for expansion and if there are raiders that have high range weapons, they will often be near the edge plinking at my turrets from max range. i invested into charge rifles thinking they would be the best gun (and they are pretty rad) but they can be outranged by bolt action rifles easily, leaving me to rely on my meelee characterto draw aggro while i move in. also once the raiders came from the opposite side of the map, and instantly took someone who was hunting

It seems to me like the problem lies in your strategy and not the game mechanics. Try something new. What you're doing right now isnt working.

Play any game with range combat vs melee, and you'll always use the same tactics. Melee with enough fortitude and speed to close distance, out-range them, or abuse line of sight. So in Rimworld, build a base that'll obstruct line of sight. You could try your skills/luck with mortars to out range them.... but I wouldn't hold my breath on a hit. For melee pawns, you'll have to wait till you get some better clothing and a shield.

Edit: It just came to me, but it's probably a good idea to grab an artifact for moments like this.

i sold my artifacts and i do have two shields, one for my meelee, and one for a paramedic (aptly named Paramedic) to run up and rescue someone.i don'y have any LoS abuse in my base (didn't know that was a thing) instead i have sandbags and turrets, as well as a well protected mortar to use on clumps of enemies. i REALLY underestimated the range of bolt action rifles, everyone but my best shooter has a charge rifle, my best shooter having a sniper.

You need animals. They run faster than a human.

Only if their pet dies I think.
Don't send pets to fight... Unless you want FUN.

Keep your bonded animals back in the base for protection. All other animals, if you have a lot of them already and are not trying to raise more, can be used in battle.

naysayers, you trash.

your colonists walk at a different speed than raider when they decide to leave and kidnapping is crap. you cannot catch up unless their movement speed is weakened due to injury or health. it is unfair, im with the OP.

quit suggesting "solutions". Only to equal movement speed will satisfy, not enemies with special powers.

We're just explaining the nuances of defense. At least he's using a mixed group of arsenals. I've seen people use only 1 weapon type and cry after they get their butts handed.

It's pretty much build walls to block vision from snipers but still allow them to pathfind and get within range of your turrets and pawns. I've seen this defense that was just 1x1 tile walls peppered all over this 3 tile wide entrance. There was an animal zone there and a bear. That's all. That method work because he had a mountain base but it demos my point.

i am one of those 1 weapon type users because i thought charge rifles were best guns because they were last on the reseach tree. my base is a little all over the place and building a wall around it wouldn't work well (considering there are sapper raiders already despite no actual defensive walls or walled-in areas). thanks for the help, but i may just stick to reloading saves and pretending I'm good at the game

it's you lack of foresight rather than the game

So your building is bug huh

Yeah i play on max map sizes with bases take one corner of the whole map, focus defenses on certain points and build walls to funnel raiders to that point

One can you screenshot your base I'll be interested in seeing it.

But turst me you aren't putting in proper defenses
