How do you deal with wargs???
I'm in early game in the tropical rainforest and the wargs are relentless!!! They keep attacking my colonists. There have been countless injuries and lost limbs, and one of my colonist died from a warg. Is there a good way to deal with these things early game?

Doors. Make sure animals don't go outside, and place a few traps around (steel works the best). When they make a beeline for you, they will take the shortest route to the closest living thing, so if that means your colonists, make sure you have some traps between you and them.

But yeah. Doors. Wild animals don't bother attacking them unless they're trapped.

More tidbits. Wargs will only attack when hungry, so check there's enough unrotten wildlife for them to snack on. They chew through small critters pretty quickly so keep an eye out.

This may not be true, but I have noticed if you kill every one of a certain species, that animal won't return for quite some time, depending on the species (did someone say bi-annual muffalo herd? :|). The easiest solution is a warg purge.

Download this mod to see how many wargs there are and where they are.

If all else fails, lol, use the rimfridge mod and build a fridge, battery, and solar panel (or just use a lot of power conduit) far away from your base, and stock it with meat. Wargs and other beasties will now eat from this delicious 24/7 meat buffet.

If you're actually considering this one, make sure the battery and solar panel are walled in but the fridge is exposed, so that tribals or pirates don't get any funny ideas.

Early game you can reduce the amount of attacks by not letting pawns outside base before the carnivores have eaten, when the animals awake they are closest to the hunger point. I noticed this with guests, if i have some arrive around dawn they are more likely to be attacked en route.
Fences mod is a great help too, wooden fences arent tough but will stop animals getting inside your perimeter initially.

An easy way of dealing with carnivorous animals is to periodicly check the map, and if you see any of them, draft some colonists with ranged weapons and manualy just hunt those animals down. Using 3-4 colonists makes it pretty safe, even with shortbows. Then you can eat them instead =)

I ended up doing as zekk suggested when on a map with many spawning carnivores. Even 1v1 using the hunting command, sometimes the colonist ends up hurt, so the best way is to periodically draft a few of them and do the hunting manually.

The other option I've been able to use, but it needs a lot of power, is to place turrets throughout the base. they have to be on all the time. when a hostile animal acts hostile, they turrets will help attack it.

Finally, one more thing is that I set ranged fighters to be on "attack" mode instead of flee mode. This way, if one or more are nearby when an animal goes hostile (because you forgot to check periodically or the way the animals move, they can cover large distances in a short time to hunt), then at least there will be a few people trying to kill the animal when it does go hostile.

As the shooting skill and weapons increase to be better, the wargs will go down faster, as well as you may also welcome the basic scratches that need to be doctored up to work up the medical skills.

they wont react to huntin animals until bitten so setting your people to attack instead of flee will not help much
and it will also mean that if someone goes bezerk they will get shot immediatly instead of just being able to ignore them for a while
its more risk then its worth

to get a warning when something is hunting you
is a better way to prevent people being hunted to death then setting people to agressive

Yes they don't do anything if the warg is hunting some wild animal, but if the warg is hunting a colonist or colony animal, then they will help attack the warg at that point, rather than fleeing. As the ranged skill and weapons dps increase, you may often find that as soon as you get the notice about a warg attacking and you go to see where it is, the warg is already downed.

Ashardalon Nov 6, 2017 @ 12:12pm
only after the first bite and by then you tend to already be missing limbs
wargs can decapitate in one bite
and setting them agressive does nothing until the first bite

on the other hand, i heard a story yesterday of a person who had someone go bezerk during a wedding
and a bezerk pawn is hostile immediatly, unlike a hunting animal
so before he could pause the bride had 40 bullet holes in her and another had brain damage from the shots that missed her

setting agressive is risky with little benefit

Easy.

Step 1. Land in tropics
Step 2. Chop down trees, change work schedule to 24-7
Step 3. Build 4x4 walls around any nearby wargs

Optional Step 4. Put a campfire inside before sealing it up.

One of the things you learn to do is routinely check the map for carnivores. If everyone has bad aim (since it's early game) than walling off and using the zone tool to keep people inside helps. Also that bad aim can, like Ashardalon said, turn your own pawns into swiss cheese before the animal is downed. You don't want to spend your precious meds healing on hunting accidents. Save it for raids.
