Id suggest also looking at placement guides but most importantly either have a gap of 3 squares between them or put a solid stone wall block between them because they can explode and chain down the line wiping out all your turrets (and perhaps pawns too)
You could then stand your gunners behind the wall blocks as they lean out to shoot around and over your turrets, get massive cover bonus, are covered from explosions (mostly) and can be undrafted to repair the turret(s) they are immediately in range of
Seeing as raiders will target whatever is firing on them, I use my turrets more as a decoy and then bushwhack the raiders with my pawns who shoot from cover from the sides. My pawns are never hit by friendly fire. Turrets hit first, raiders engage and then pawns catch them in a crossfire = success... time for some weed and beer ;)
