how do you train animals?
i have a dog with the "obediance" training option checked. i have a colinist with animal handling work checked. the colonist is idling and not training the animal.

he will attempt to train but like taming can only try 2-3 times a day

Make sure your Colonists have a high enough skill level.

They will only train a few times per day before the animal has been attempted too many times - same goes for taming, there's a cool down.

Food must be at the ready somewhere or else your colonist will not attempt to train - same applies with taming.

Pigs are better than dogs IMO. Not as good in combat (I think). But that's not their purpose for me. Pigs can eat grass and bushes so you only needs to give them kibble in the middle of winter ( or hay)

animals will eat from corpses but to use food for training the animal will need to be butchered first

You see, that's the catch - it's like saying "I prefer Porsche 911 to Dodge RAM". True, the former would definitely get you to wherever you want faster - but only on the road, and it won't help you at all if you need to move a dozen bags of cement; the latter, though, can scale rougher terrain and has no problem lifting quite a bit of weight. It's all about what you use them for. Unless we're talking about Yorkshire terriers, dogs (and even more so, wolves and wargs) have higher DPS and movement speed, which is something you would want your combat-oriented animals to have; the downside is, yes, them being carnivorous.
