Ship Building
So I finally reached end-tech on my first play-through. Looking at all of the ship parts... looking, looking, blinking, staring... Do I sudddenly suck at Legos?!?
These pieces don't look like they go together. And am I missing like the ship's hull somewhere in the UI?

I feel derpy, but as a person with a brain-injury type of condition, I don't mind simply swallowing some pride and asking what I'm missing.

I haven't cared to build a ship in years, but if memory serves, it just looks like ♥♥♥♥ so don't worry about it. It's only a matter of placing the pieces together to maximize how many pods you can add for your colonists.

the ship doesnt have to look functional
as long as things are connected they are good, only the stasis stuff needs to be correctly attached to the long piece (sorry its been a long time sinse i bothered)
some people make it look functional for aestetic reasons but it doesnt need to
probably the piece you notice missing is the outer hull segments, those dont exist

So you just... assemble the guts of the ship together...?

imo the ship building isn't really that fun, really hope we can use the ship or something. Just throwing everything together haphazardly is A okay as far as the game is concerned, outside of making sure you have space for building the cryptosleep pods for the uh, human holding dodah.

In space, aerodynamics does not matter.

Clearly the ship isn't built in space though...

As long as you have enough propulsion, you can make anything fly :)

There's also a mod that adds additional (read: decorative) parts for your ships. But basically, yeah, you just need to build a ship reactor, then ship chassis parts protruding in any direction, add an engine or two to the reactor, an AI core, and as many criopods as you need, and your makeshift, bare essentials, Tony Stark's trashsuit circa Iron Man 1-styled spaceship is done.

Why an engine "or two" ?

aestetic reasons, one wil work no matter the size of your ship

Ok! Good to know!

Yeah, exactly that. The default ship engine is two tiles wide, whereas the generator is at whopping five. Technically, you're free to make your ships as skitzophrenically asymmetric as you like, but I just mount a couple engines and call it a day.
