The AI does attack you once you open fire on them. Kinda makes sense they would rush you rather than sit around getting shot at by a mortar though.
I think you need to get bettter (not an insult) , pause often is my advice. If your fighitng in the open you doing it wrong.
"so colonists literally end up walking through a ♥♥♥♥ing field completely upright until they get shot" .... you do realise you can control your colonists? thats your own fault.
"and SUDDENLY all these pirates decide that they can now SEE US" , you notice how you can see the enemy at all times no matter were they are on the map? , there is obviously no fog of war of course they can see you.
yep, for some reason he thinks the AI should sit there and die and not attack
i assume this is what you mean by 'taking cover in the forest'
Also, why dont all the pawns attack at the same time as the mortars target you? They just wander around.
And my point isnt that im controlling them poorly, my point is that in real combat, assaulting across an open field involves troops going prone to provide suppressing fire, only moving in short periods.
And no, i dont think AI should sit and take mortar fire if they dont have good cover, but thats their default move for any attacks, even for just a bow attack, they leave good cover to attack.
2) Do you honestly not see why the pirates might not be happy awaiting certain death by mortar fire? Do you not think that people might try something with a slightly higher (i.e. non-zero) chance of survival?
You might want to look at the Combat Extended mod.
I mean, it is a game with pawns shaped like little fat chess pieces that bop around and do a bunch of unrealistic stuff in the manner of making the video game fun. Combat extended makes it more realistic. Your asking for hyper-realistic combat in a game that already simulates a high level of stuff. How many games like this even have functional combat systems let alone military grade assault strategy using incremental advancement and suppression?
You have really, really high expectations for a game that already does a lot of stuff fantastically. The combat is serviceable and can be improved with mods. They are always working on the game and im sure will improve it.
