How stupid are chickens ?
Not much experience with chickens.

If I provide a safe area for chickens, and give them direct access to my freezer for food. Will they linger to long only for their feet fall off from frostbite like my last ill fated flock ?

They shouldn't. As long as they have access to a comfortable temperature area they should "Seek safe temperature" if they start getting hypothermic.

I have cattle (actual cows not muffalo) and let them come inside the certain parts of our base for warmth but don't restrict them to it and they survived the last -20 winter without losing any limbs.
Cool, cheers Lvl One Mage

just make sure u have enuf sleeping spot in the safe temperature otherwise they might fall asleep in freezer
Yeah I was thinking that bigsengineer. I actually hauled corn straight into my pet area because I dont trust those chickens one bit.

You can also make a single tile for just the food they eat outside in their area. Make a a few tile section in your freezer room for their feed also but set it's priority to like 20%.

I think chickens have drastically simplified AIs because of how numerous they get. I wouldn't trust them to move anywhere for food. There's no reason to give them access to a freezer, the food they eat doesn't need to be frozen. Cram them all in a small area and make a food stockpile in that area for them.

They are really good for eggs and meat but they reproduce at an instane speed. Just make a barn area with lots of animal beds then restrict them to stay in the barn.

I wouldn't even bother with sleeping spots for chickens.

Just use RimFridge if you totally have to freeze their hay.

Chickens are dumb. They wont move very far to eat and have no problem sleeping in the cold. Any any biome ive played that has bad winters and i have chickens, they have no issues sleeping outside in the freezing cold compared to their heated barn. I usually leave their barn and the area around their barn a single zone, and i usually have to slaughter extra chickens every winter from frostbite.

Playing on arid shrubland, i couldnt allow them to roam free, otherwise they would eat the grass in one area and then stay there and starve untill they wandered close enough to another dirt patch. I had to set zones and cycle them, otherwise i would have to rescue chickens daily that were too dumb to move 30-40 tiles to eat.

Keep a food stockpile for them in their coop. Dont let them in your freezer. Other then them being dumb and dieing, chickens are dirty and leave filth everywhere.
