Animal handlers won't train huskies?
Hi all,

I started a new colony after adding a bunch of mods. It seems my animal handler(s) won't train my huskies. I have 4 huskies (2 are pregnant), and I have tried the following:

- make sure my animal handler has enough skill in animals to train the huskies by checking huskies' required training skill (he does -- he's level 12 and is also interested in it);
- make sure I have food for the training (I even made kibble in case it needed kibble specifically);
- make sure my primary animal handler has no other work set AT ALL than train animals -- he just idles in that case;
- right click on the animal to try to force training as priority (this produces no result: right clicking on the animal -- with trainer selected -- does NOTHING);
- try another colonist on training (she won't do it either);
- double check that I have set training to "on"/green tick for Obedience in Animal tab.

None of that makes any difference: my trainer still won't train, and I can't force him to prioritize it by right clicking a husky.

What gives? The only things I can think of are that it's a mod causing a problem (or I need to set a setting that I don't know about in a mod), OR that there's some obvious vanilla setting that I'm forgetting about.

I didn't have this problem in my previous colony, so I'm particularly confused.

Please help! Currently they are just eating me out of house and home, and it would be nice if I could train them to do something useful.

Could be your restrictions.

Good thought, but I just checked and don't think so? Colonists and huskies are all set to unrestricted area atm, and handler's day has some work hours specified.

He isn't mute, right? Try assigning another colonist. Dogs require no skill to handle, so anyone would do.

No, he's not mute, good thought though. I tried assigning another colonist -- still no luck.

It gets weirder, too. I had a gazelle self tame just now. Handlers will train the gazelle. Still not the huskies. Can't see that my settings are any different for the gazelle.

Is there any particular food needed for dog/husky training?

Do you have raw meat in stocks?

Did you try restarting RimWorld?

This is starting to sound like mods perhaps (specially if you can train other animals). Can you list the mod order?

I sometimes have raw meat in stock, but it tends to be gone quite quickly due to very efficent cooks / my inefficient balancing of overall cooking materials. Could it be that?

I haven't tried restarting RimWorld, will do so now.

Here's the mod order:

Core
HugsLib
Medical Tab
Wildlife Tab
RIMKea
Pawns Play Poker
Additional Joy Objects
Vanilla Animal Overhaul
More vanilla factions
Quarry
Realistic Rooms
Stack XXL
Moody
Facial Stuff
Hospitality
Quality Surgeon
Psychology
Pawns Play Together

Interesting, thank you. Do you (or anyone else) know if disabling that mod will mess up my save file?

This is hella old, and probably not relevant, but this comes up on Google if you search the problem, and I believe I know the cause and a temporary workaround.

The mod Vanilla Animals Overhaul has a bug that impacts animals' interactions with their masters, and it prevents things like training [and shearing/milking as well]. The mod's author says that for the time being you can fix this by assigning "none" as the pet's master, or in other words having the pet have no master, and I was able to work around the issue several times with that. I hope this helps; good luck.
