So far, I only usually use shelves to store finished apparel I've crafted (extra clothes, mostly). If I can use it for corpses/raw meat however, and put those in the kitchen, it will shorten transit times a bit. Or I can just put them in the freezer so I don't need to designate multiple "freezer zones" for what is a minor part of my use of the space.
They're not necessary outside but I suppose they look nicer than weaponry lying around on the ground.
I usually seperate out my freezers by type.
Vegetables, Raw Meat, Corpses of Animals, Corpses of Humans, and Meals.
All have 25 spaces inside, 5x5.
1 colonist = 10 meals = 100 units of raw ingredients = 2 to 4 tiles.
So if you have 10 colonists, a 40-tile freezer should be all right. Obv more is better so that you'd have a buffer for emergencies. You can try 10 tiles per colonist just to be safe.
I build 9 5x5 plots and enclose it in wood with a wood floor seperating the crops out and surrounding them.
In future games, I'll probably stick with 6 instead.
Think there's a mod (or a couple even) that feature fences. Keeps animals out. If that's your thing you should check on the workshop.
I tend to do it more for organization and faster moving, as I would sometimes build around that actual farm building and have it be a center of sorts. Or I would try to.
A small 3x2 for meals at the front, so they dont place them in the back of my freezer lol.
2 side by side piles for basic mats with high priority.
Then a large stockpile with basic mats on normal priority.
This way my cook(s) aren't running 20 tiles to cook a single meal, and haulers keep everything neat.
