Thunderstorms too OP (mod to limit them?)
Hi all! So I decided to play on the "some challenge" difficulty and gameplay is good. Well until the dreaded Thunderstorm happens.

I know it rains as well towards the end but it literaly looks like 3-4 lightning strikes hit at once! Its ridiculous. I know the old "build a firewall" tactic (which i did implement (and a Donald Trump wall around my whole base)) but that still doesnt limit the amount of damage it does in and out of my base. Even sometimes it hits my colonists/animals and Im scrambling to help them. It is just terrible especially when these things last 5+ minutes (no joke I just paused my game in the middle of the worst one yet to post this discussion.)

So... Is there a mod to help limit this? Because I had this event more than anything else combined and its starting to piss me off. Thanks!

I'd imagine you can scenario edit them? I've not messed much with scenario editing, but you can add permanent weather conditions, so I have to imagine you can take away thunderstorms.

You can do that? How?

One of the optioons when you're first starting a game is to make a custom scenario. The button for it shows up when you're selecting "Crashlanded", "Lost Tribe", or...whatever that lonely rich guy is. Anyway, go in there and use all of the same conditions of the official scenario you usually play, but then add an exception for thunderstorms

Disable Incident specifically. Add that to the list, then select thunderstorms (you might also want to add dry thunderstorms, those are much worse because there's no rain to put out the fires).

Is there a way to do this when you already started the game?

You may be able to edit the save file, but I am not sure of the exact things you'd need to find/change in there to get that accomplished.

Alright, thanks all!

What's the problem, actually? Once you have a firebreak, wildfire is not dangerous at all, and direct hit by lightning... Very rare event.

As someone still reeling from the learning curve on this game, on "some challenge" there are all kinds of mundane events that will kill you. Thunderstorms, drought, toxic things, a bad pack of manhunters. Nothing that isn't beatable if you know a bit about the game, but it seems like whatever your deficiency is, the AI will find it and kill you. I've never played it without permadeath on, so I have died to innumerable seemingly innocuous events that I simply hadn't seen or wasn't prepared for.

It seems like each biome with have certain things it hits pretty hard, in some southern temperate forest you get heat waves like crazy, in northern you get hard winters, other randomness may make thunderstorms what is likely going to kill you.

I would recommend focusing on protecting yourself from the fire risk, and if a bolt 1-shots an animal or colonist, next man up. Restarting the game or modding because you aren't winning because of randomness will generate an endless early playthrough, as you move into the mid-game it is a blessed colony that hasn't lost many valuable members.

Given I play perma-death, you can really see how one random event doesn't kill you, it incapacitates someone and maybe they do a critical job and you don't recognize that everything is going to crap soon enough and it spirals. That's sort of the challenge, thrill, and heartbreak of the game for me, the endless feeling that something i am going to do it going to set me down this downward spiral of trying to survive a hard winter, my crop stockpile burning, and my hunter going AWOL on a abrosia binge, or something equally dangerous due to the accumulation of bad RNG events that isn't going to kill you now, but easily could down the road..

My current play-through I had all 3 of my colonists incapacitated, then hours before one starved they woke up, ate, fed everyone else, and a caravan with a sack of meds came by. I also had a pet boomrat turn manhunter inside the base and blow things up. Survived a toxic fallout and volcanic winter running through the mentioned meds and having no herbals either because that kind of winter basically wastes all life on the map. Anyway, dealing with the compounded RNG events is sort of the masochistic challenge of the game.

Wait what?

Thunderstorms are a mild nuicanse, atleast on some challenge/rough difficulty. (Not sure if it gets any worse on higher difficulty)

As soon as it starts just put a home zone over every place it starts burning.
Have everyone fight fire as number 1 priority.

And thats it. Disaster averted.
Its however a nuicanse cause it takes alot of time, as you need to do it until it rains.

Razors will drop down as it rains, it's extremely lethal.

Guessing this is a mod? Don't think that's a vanilla event.
