Perfect Grow Zone Size
Hi All,
Im curious if there is a efficient size to have a growing zone. Ive noticed if you have lots of little ones i never get enough crops and if i have one huge big paddock they never seem to have time to haul the ♥♥♥♥ away

depends take corn for example slow growing even on fertile land but a huge yeild so don't make a big space for that. Strawberries can be eaten raw and are fast growing which means your colonist cna start eating that a bit faster. Rice also grows fast but needs to be processed as its nota good thing to be eaten raw. Potatoes have the best grow:yeild ratio.

Corn makes most yield per plant per day, best/fastest on Rich soil then Lichen-covered dirt and then normal soil/dirt, https://www.reddit.com/r/RimWorld/comments/3qsofj/food_growth_stats/

@OP

End of the day you just need enough food...

If you are getting too many crops to haul, but enough food, switch some of the crop to corn, which grows much slower, once you get the right balance, it gives you more time in between crops vs rice on fertile soil for example.

Or you can just roof and wall off a farm plot and just haul the harvests back whenever you feel like it as they wont deteriorate by being unroofed.

I prefer starting 8x5's. Small enough that starting colonies, with so many vital tasks per person, can tend to a plot without losing half a week in the doing and large enough for yields to be worth it on some level of future proofing.

Just thought I'd give you a number even though in truth it depends.

11x11

That's the size of a sun lamp's coverage area, it allows you to roof over it without building extra supports, is small enough to easily manage and large enough to provide a good deal of food. A single 11x11 will provide ample food for you starting colony and first few additions, once you get around 8-10 or so people (depending on fertility) you can bump that up to two 11x11 plots.

For things that do well without fertile soil, I like long rectangles, usually about 2 x 12 I think, with rows bewteen that my hauling animals can enter. Most of the harvested crops fall into the rows and the animals pick it up and stockpile it for me.
