/edit: or that they are not trained to haul
He got hauling animals, set as unrestricted and there is a way to go outside for them.
Try to play without hauling hysteresis.
Maybe there is a bug with animals in this mod.
What? that's completly untrue. Distance is not a factor at all for hauling, especially with animals.
That's what i'm thinking. I'll turn the mod off tomorrow and see if it works.
Yes it is true. Animals have a very limited range for what they are looking at to save CPU cycles because people often have a lot of them. Animals will often start to starve in large bases even with access to food because they can't see the food unless they wander close enough to it, it's the same with hauling.
Nope. Turns out its a bug with the amount of items on the floor. The fact that the items are far away has no relevance, its purely based on the number of items in the game.
Also, its not a limitation i have to deal with at all. There's a very simple fix.
The problem is animals only look for so many items to haul before they 'give up', so they check all the items in a base then 'give up' because they have reached their checking limit. So anything outside of the base will not be hauled as the limit will be reached before the animal AI can check for items outside the base.
This mod fixes it:

So that's the bug. I had another longer post here but deleted it because I thought about it a bit more. It's possible dead rotting animals on the map are imposing the apparent "awareness range limit" so many of us have been experiencing. I generally don't set up a stockpile for them, and while usually they remain forbidden it's possible I sometimes get one unforbidden and that might cause animals to only search out as far as that corpse before resetting. I would have to do more testing to see if thats it. Thanks for sharing though, whether or not this fixes the haul range limit it's still a bug I wasn't aware of.
