Best hunting weapons?
Googling says Shotguns for the short range & high damage
SMG for short range & quick fire
Short bow for some kind of hunting bonus

Anyone able to say what the best weapons are?

Best? No idea. Prefer survival rifles for hunting. Gives you some distance from the target so when (not if) they retaliate you have more space to deal with it. The rifle also does not blow off limbs like the sniper so more leather and meat. Not a fan of short range wepons for hunting, though hunting with grenades was funny. Great bow > short bow IMO

I used the weapons my pawn have.
That's all.
I'll second Survival Rifle, though I usually use sniper rifles for less micro when raids hit

I like 100% accurate sniper rifles for hunting. Quick, usually one shot kills, and safe with plenty of time to shoot a second time before it closes, or the best headstart to flee a mass revenge.

Depends on what you are hunting. The survival and sniper rifles give better accuracy and a safer attack distance. Sniper is better for the more aggressive or larger creatures as you are more likely to kill or maim the creature preventing retaliation. Survival is better for small or moderate sized creatures who can sometimes fight back. Think foxes, antelopes and boomalopes. Lastly is the pistol which sucks at DPS but is great at racking up shooting experience. Pistol hunting should be used on the really small or slow stuff like rats, squirrels or turtles.

Also if you get a good enough melee weapon you can hunt small animals for easy experience. Melee is a pain to level up in other ways so getting a long sword or a mace and smack around small mammals is the way to go for leveling this up quickly.

I like charge rifles because they have shorter range so higher chance to hit and they fire 3 shots.

I also just like to mortar deer hoardes for the hell of it
I usually use either a shotgun or assault rifle

Assault rifle for me. Good balance between range and power.

Grenades for night hunter. 99% kill rate. 3 for a bear or elephant

Charge rifle tend to always tear some limbs/bodyparts = reduced meat gain = reduced hunting efficiency.

UPD. Hell, don't seen that was necro T_T

Do you have a mod that lets you hunt with melee? Because currently you have to manually draft and attack with melee to do that, and then set your colonists to haul. That means that a colonist who doesn't do dumb labor can't really effectively hunt, either, because that doesn't count as hunting (why they can haul during a hunt sequence but not when they're drafted, ugh).

Generally you dont want to set a guy to hunt and let him do it alone.

Eventually with a guy randomly wandering the map you are going to either have a raid hit or he is going to get jumped by a hungry animal.

When you hunt its better to just wait for a large pack and have several people with enough firepower go out together and take them down.

You can haul several corpses with the people already there, and get the rest when they bleed to death later and it works out safer and more efficient than 1 guy always running around half the map.

If you're playing permadeath, this is definitely true. Don't want to get caught out chopping lumber in the wilderness like the Hound while your village burns. :3

The threat of a person wielding a long range weapon getting attacked is pretty minimal, it seems to me. I've only had them attacked by a predator maybe once or twice, ever, and they were using a longer range assault weapon both times so they were ok.

But I have been attacked by raids while hunting, and that person always has to haul ass back to the base in a hail of gunfire (that is usually too far to hit them but still scary).
