If you decide that you want to change your colony name, use dev mode, just found this out recently.
I name my colony depending on the way I want them to act, if I want to be a hostile colony I name my colony Notorious, If i want to be a friendly colony I name my colony Crashlanded or The New Frontier (From the TT, The Walking Dead, yes >.<).
I nickname my colonist depending what thier name is and what they do, I nicknamed Dominic to Doominator because one time I equiped him with a triple rocket laucher and he blew pirates off to sea, litterally they were all walking across the lake and BOOM, rip pirates.
25% of my time in Rimworld has been deciding on a name since you can't save it until you've decided. Knowing it's not permanent is really good.
My colonists:
A violent thug who became a paramedic.
A war torn refugee who likes to start new wars.
A dumb celebrity who became a genius teacher.
Names don't matter too much, they don't have to match with there life style.
