Best HP = plasteel
Best HP that won't burn = Granite

I would go with any type of stone you wish.
Generally the perimeter walls are rarely targeted and raiders (with the exception of sappers, and sappers will destroy a wall of any hp density if they are determined to do so) will more often than not seek to pass through an existing gap in the perimeter wall. So, as long as you leave an opening somewhere in your perimeter wall, the wall itself will never be hit.
Your defenses, such as turrets or deadfall taps will be advantageous as plasteel.
The turrets will have 3x greater hp than steel.
Deadfalls will deal significantly more damage.

Double thick stone walls is what to work towards, and if you find a wealthy pocket of it, make the inner layer plasteel so the stone stops fires but the plasteel stops intruders

Granite is the best. It not burning is more important than whatever hp plasteel has over it. I think after granite the quality of walls goes to limestone, sandstone, marble and lastly slate.

Basically the two best rock types to have are Granite and marble. Granite for defenses and marble for sculptures. Slate is the worst, but it is still better than wood for walls.

but slate looks good alongside marble so it has its benefits even if the game doesnt think so

also 6+ thick walls means sappers wont try

Slate has a lower beauty value (in game) than limestone granite and marble. Its alright if you like to look at it, but your colonists wont like it as much

Stone. Does not set on fire, which is important to contain fires.
Steel, Silver, and Plasteel all burn, rendering their superior beauty and price meaningless in case of a poorly positioned Zzzt!, Flashstorm, or doomsday rocket launcher.

Everyone seems to forget as well that bricks are several thousand times easier to get and something like 50 times cheaper, i find granite is the best and never even considered a wall made out of a metal

Brick walls do require you to do some tech research. This is partly why some people favor other materials.
