Best HP that won't burn = Granite
Generally the perimeter walls are rarely targeted and raiders (with the exception of sappers, and sappers will destroy a wall of any hp density if they are determined to do so) will more often than not seek to pass through an existing gap in the perimeter wall. So, as long as you leave an opening somewhere in your perimeter wall, the wall itself will never be hit.
Your defenses, such as turrets or deadfall taps will be advantageous as plasteel.
The turrets will have 3x greater hp than steel.
Deadfalls will deal significantly more damage.
Basically the two best rock types to have are Granite and marble. Granite for defenses and marble for sculptures. Slate is the worst, but it is still better than wood for walls.
also 6+ thick walls means sappers wont try
Steel, Silver, and Plasteel all burn, rendering their superior beauty and price meaningless in case of a poorly positioned Zzzt!, Flashstorm, or doomsday rocket launcher.
Brick walls do require you to do some tech research. This is partly why some people favor other materials.
