How to Make decent Barracks?
So after realizing that building 10+ fullsized, fully furnished, heated/cooled and decorated rooms is really not to feasible for my current colony... I decided to move to a bunkhouse/barracks approach.

I've gotten it to the point where the Decorations/space/general awesomeness offsets most of the negative mood effects of a bunkhouse (shared room, etc). One thing that is giving me a bit of trouble is the 'Disturbed Sleep' debuff everyone gets everytime someone walks into the door.

Question is... how do I remedy this problem? Is there some spacing/building tricks that will prevents people disturbing each other? Or is this just an unavoidable cost of using a Bunkhouse?

That buff is with a barracks almost 100%. The single bedrooms do really play better just dont make them huge. Dont let them stay in long then you can make decent 3x3 bedrooms with a vent to the hallway. Tile it up do good plus beds and they wont have major debuffs.

I've never made a super large colony, but I have used barracks while journeying to the premade spaceship quest. You can just give your night owls their own seperate barracks. Like you said, the disturbed sleep and shared bedroom debuff is something you'll have to take on the chin when using barracks. But you can minimise the stack so it will never go to max of 4x.

Another situation I can think of is when your night owl cleaners see all the dirt in your large barrack. They'll march right in without a care who they wake up. Vice-versa can happen too. I'd suggest you take your time and designate cleaners to only clean their own barracks. Night-owls to night barracks and day-folk to day barracks (if that makes sense).

Lastly, make those barracks have multiple entrances (like all good bases should) but forbid all doors except for one. That one would be the main entrance. Unforbid the doors when you're under attack or just need to get somewhere fast.

reroll chars till they are all perverts.. no shared room problem... lol
With a 2x6 room there's enough room for a royal bed and a statue. Those two things (or even an excellent or higher wooden bed) should prevent debuffs from having a crappy room and you won't get disturbed sleep debuffs. Then, so long as your commons rooms are very nice (nice armchairs, marble tables, a couple of statues, etc). You can keep your beauty/space/comfort scores high most of the time and mental breaks will be rare. Don't forget to build armchairs at all your workstations.

unfortunitly barracks arnt the real 'desired' homes of the game, there more a patch job solution untill you build rooms, as such they have the arbitrary barracks debuff untill you make it pretty, afterwhich the main problem is the disturbed sleep debuff, theres no way around that if you have a shared room and they dont all go to sleep at the same time, its one of the main reasons barracks arnt commonly used pass the start-early game, its manageible if your carefull but its just a avoidible hassel if you use barracks, probs on makeing a decent 10 room barracks though

What side should a bedroom be? Also what are all the spacious buffs? Also what should normal room sizes be for workshop and rec room, should I aim for 12x12 or something like 10x10?

Do some testing. At what radius does a pawn need to walk next to a sleeping pawn to get the disturbed sleep debuff? I imagine you can make a huge room, but put walls between beds to prevent pawns from walking too close to sleeping pawns.

You could just lock the doors until everyone is awake/asleep that way no one walks in or out until everyone is up.

Set different zones for your night owls, exclude the daytime workers barracks.
And not 100% sure, but it might help if you set their schedule so that all the daytime workers go to bed at the same time, and in the session just before that, do not select 'anything' or some may go to bed early.

Tried it with my hospital layouts...

The end result is make single rooms, as in order to try to make it barracks style it takes much more room, has multiple drawbacks and little to no positives.

@OP

You can take a look at my screen shots to see what I do for rooms, but you can essentially make a 11x11 room split into 4 separate bedrooms that are easy to heat and cool.

Barracks are early game or I have no better option type of setup.

Sadly build single sleeping room asap. Barracks are weak to "disturbing sleep".

2x3 rooms with at least a positiv beauty give a neutral mood.

Wouldnt it be easier to give a larger room thats easier to work with?

He is mentioning a design for 10 people, so I believe his concern is with mid/late game vs early temporary designs.

What do you think if my defenses?[imgur.com]. It's still work in progress.I'm thinking on changing to a small labyrinth that abruptly ends right next to the end of the hallway, instead of a long hallway itself (because of Centipedes with Inferno cannons)

Right after I finished placing my turrets a Elephants manhunter pack came, and it worked like a charm! Nobody got hurt.

Just make sure to have a back up if those turrets arent working.
