Roof Collapsed; WTH?
So, I've just had a message that a roof collapsed because it was too far from any support. There's a pillar TWO SQUARES AWAY! How can mining be feasible if you can't dig more than one square from a support?

Is mining really that bad or am I missing something here? I'm sure I've dug more than that before without a cave-in. Please help.

A single support can support a roof up to 6 tiles away.

Better to remove as much roof as you can when mining then supporting what you cant.

Well, that's what I thought, but as you can see by the screenshot, there is a pillar two tiles away, but the roof still collapsed. I always pull down roof when mining, but that bit is apparently 'overhead mountain', so I couldn't remove it.

Might be something due to a mod

You shouldn't even need that support as the rest of the mountain should hold it up.
The fact that the collapsed rock is one tile from a steel deposit is more curious than it being two from a support.

Almost certainly interference from mods.
The other option is you put the rocks there using the debug menu, but, I'm sure you'd remember doing that.

That support doesn't appear to be under any roof to me... Or is that because of the collapse? Either way I have never needed supports when mining that little, so it's weird.

i think that is one square of overhead mountain and you deroofed the non overhead mountain roofs around
so there is no roof connecting the overhead mountain to the supports
please give a screenshot with the roof overlay turned on to confirm
never just unroof randomly, unroof in strait lines, if there is one square that you cant it will colapse when you destroy the supports it has from the other roofs

Your support is not touching a roof I think. But even then the rocks around it should have supported it up to 6 tiles... Maybe there was a bug or that roof was not connected anywhere else. It might be possible that roof was thick mountain, and there were not roofs on the squares around it, so it fell due to gravity.

They aren't supporting anything you need to build the roof over them to support

Ok, thanks for your thoughts, people. I'll go and see if I can figure exactly what is happening with roofed and non-roofed bits.

Ok, so the square where the fallen rocks are is overheaed mountain, as is the suare diagonally up and right from it and the suare on up from that (which is marble). The bits of compacted steel to the right also seem to have overhead mountain; the rest of what I can check is roofless.

yea you cut the supports overhead
as an example try digging it away - it will collapse again
now build a roof either, from above the support you build to the collapsed place or from the overhead mountain diagonal to the collapsed place - now it should not collapse

Oops! Note to self, be more careful when mining and removing roofing.
