Early game, manhunters can be devestating. I try to pool days worth of rations within stone walls, and if maddened animals come for my colonists, I hold up in the 'safe room' until it goes away. Theoretically, I'd have set up some auto turrets or at least deadfall traps, too.

Manhunting animals, especially packs of them later game, are terrifying. Proper preperation and defense is necessary, do not blow them off as a joke.
