Tips?
I'm kinda new to this and usually my playthroughs go like this:
Start game, thrive, not run low on food, seems like my dudes are holding up well.
Get raided, die.
I feel like I do everything I can xD, I haven't had a single game that has taken over like 3 hours because I always die.
Any help would be nice :D

COVER GET COVER the info button will give you cover values and tool tips on your aiming if you mouse over an aiming colonist

You click on the raider. Look at all their stats. This is on pause. Look for weaknessess, look at what you cannot compete against. If they are a master at melee you don't want to try to use mele against them. If you have two guns, you may have the best defense. Get him in a confined area, using cover is excellent. Shoot him in cross fire where your guys are not going to shoot each other and the raider has to decide which one he will fire on. If there is enough cover your shooters can take turns either shooting or advancing. If there is only one gun, the melee guy will have to sneak up on him while the shooter keeps him busy. If there are two melee fighters you will have to jump him in a narrow passage so he cannot fire on you. If you hit him often enough he will drop his weapon and it will be yours. If you have no weapon, have them pick up a log as a weapon. It's better than nothing. If you are really in desperate straites you can send a colonist in front of them to draw fire. You don't want the colonist killed, just distract the raider so your melee fighter can strike or shooters shoot. If they are a stronger oponent it is important that several melee fighters attack at once. Shooters may continue shooting at disadvantageous times so use your pause to make sure everyone is doing what they should to take cover, advance or strike or run.

Good luck.

try the tutorial for some realy helpful tips. build little sandbag bunkers around your base and allways get your guys in there. improvised turrets are also very good. craft helmets and armor for your folks aswell. and remember allways give the best guns to the ones with the highest shooting skill. good luck

You can craft shortbows at the shooting spot if you're lacking in ranged weapons. Train and release animals to distract them. Wall your base. Build a killbox. Build a cover building so your pawns are in the dark and behind cover. chunks can slow enemies down, the enemie is slowed down by having to climb up so if you make MULTIPLE ROWS WITH SPACE BETWEEN EACH ROW OF CHUNKS around your pawns cover area the melee and any other advancing enemies will have a much a harder time reaching your pawns, sandbags also have to be climbed over but they cost steel. Try to bottle neck them with your built walls so you know where the enemy is coming and you can prepare appropiately in advance.

Well, look up some videos and see how people are playing. I think it would help you since you're dieing to small raids. Your people will shoot each other while aiming at other enemies if you don't place them properly. It helps to spread them out a little and not be just in a giant clump. Use sandbags and walls for cover. Use ied traps, deadfall traps, turrets, create a killbox if youre struggling. If you know you can't handle the raid coming up request back up from a faction, or hide out in your base. Sometimes it's worth letting them steal stuff and wreck a few of your items if you want your players to live. Though that should rarely happen. You can get a player to repair a door while the raiders/animals are beating down on them to prevent the door from breaking. They can't do repairs while draft so undraft them.

pause the game when you first start and look for a good, easily defendable, spot for your town to settle in. also remember that anything you can use as cover, your enemies can also use as cover. i cut down trees near my colony so the enemies are just standing out in the open. also rocks on the floor can be used as cover (though not a lot) or used to slow down choke points because they have to crawl over them.

Keep in mind you can also use walls as cover. If you stick a colonist in the space next to the corner of a building, they'll lean around the corner to shoot. They'll also lean into doorways if you toggle "Hold Open" on the door and send one of your people through it. Just keep in mind that if you have wooden walls, they can only take so much punishment before they break (but you can usually quickly move your colonist to the next wall section and repeat as needed).

I find early raiders often try heading through the gaps between buildings - this is good, because your people can shoot from the corners of both buildings, and if you time it right, the raiders won't have any cover until/unless they retreat back to the other end of the alley. The downside is, you end up having a lot of structure damage to repair later, but that's better than colonist damage.

Also remember to give the survival rifle (in your stock at landing) to the colonist with the highst shooting skill ... and the pistol to the one with the second highest.
(and ideally take care, already at the beginning (by rerolling colonists), that at least one of your colonists has a high enough shooting skill (ideally 6 or higher)

If you playing on a high difficulty, your average mood level is lower. Always let them have maximum joy. Sitting on a good chair or bed will increase comfort mood. Chair also work when they are crafting. Just place a chair on the crafting spot. Mood level will not change while sleeping. So bedrooms can be dark and not beautifull. (Getting impressive bedrooms is just to expensiv)

The more wealth you got the stronger the enemie attacks. Thats why you should sold your impressive gold art etc.
Short path = less time going from A to B, also less time having thoughs like "i feel hungry"

Best combat weapon is charge rifle. (high dps, low range) But it lacks range. The sniper rifle is good for sieging, but especially against meleeattacker bad. Good shooting skill=higher skill to hit on range. Carefull shooter = Overpowered
Build your base like a fortress. Place turrets in the first line as meatshields. Have a 2nd line of defense, because angry boars will ignore the turrets and attack humans first, so falling back is a good strategy.

Know your map types: Jungle for example will have an insane amount of illnesses. Just annouying at late game. Permanent frost map will have a thick layer of snow, hindering you to move fast. At under -50°C only mechanoids will spawn.

Build a great, magnificent wall

But in al seriousness, build a wall preferably out of stone, as stone doubles as a fire barrier. Build ne or two entrances which are heavily fortified by sandbags, and later down the line auto turrets.
The best, less exploitive way to lower your chance of getting shot in one of these fortifications is as follows:
1.Ensure colonists are behind a sandbag
2. Ensure they are under a roof, and have no lights near them (this ensures it is dark as possible, which offers a huge acccuracy debuff for the opposing force
3.Try to build these fortifications on the edge of bodies of water, because this will slow down the enemy and prevent trees from growing, which can provide cover for the enemy
