Good luck.
I find early raiders often try heading through the gaps between buildings - this is good, because your people can shoot from the corners of both buildings, and if you time it right, the raiders won't have any cover until/unless they retreat back to the other end of the alley. The downside is, you end up having a lot of structure damage to repair later, but that's better than colonist damage.
(and ideally take care, already at the beginning (by rerolling colonists), that at least one of your colonists has a high enough shooting skill (ideally 6 or higher)
The more wealth you got the stronger the enemie attacks. Thats why you should sold your impressive gold art etc.
Short path = less time going from A to B, also less time having thoughs like "i feel hungry"
Best combat weapon is charge rifle. (high dps, low range) But it lacks range. The sniper rifle is good for sieging, but especially against meleeattacker bad. Good shooting skill=higher skill to hit on range. Carefull shooter = Overpowered
Build your base like a fortress. Place turrets in the first line as meatshields. Have a 2nd line of defense, because angry boars will ignore the turrets and attack humans first, so falling back is a good strategy.
Know your map types: Jungle for example will have an insane amount of illnesses. Just annouying at late game. Permanent frost map will have a thick layer of snow, hindering you to move fast. At under -50°C only mechanoids will spawn.
But in al seriousness, build a wall preferably out of stone, as stone doubles as a fire barrier. Build ne or two entrances which are heavily fortified by sandbags, and later down the line auto turrets.
The best, less exploitive way to lower your chance of getting shot in one of these fortifications is as follows:
1.Ensure colonists are behind a sandbag
2. Ensure they are under a roof, and have no lights near them (this ensures it is dark as possible, which offers a huge acccuracy debuff for the opposing force
3.Try to build these fortifications on the edge of bodies of water, because this will slow down the enemy and prevent trees from growing, which can provide cover for the enemy
