Death when mining collapsed ceilings
So this took out 4 people. For some reason, the regular rock areas collapsed as I was mining them. No biggs. So I then took some guys and mined the collapsed roof, at which point they each died as they finished their square. So if you mine a roof that has already collapsed, it re-collapses and kills you immediately?

There was nothing around it, unless I was misunderstanding the map. I had mined everything else, it was just 4 or 5 dark rock looking tiles surrounded by ground.

Just hover your mouse over the tile and look at the bottom left of your screen. Should indicate what kind of roof it is.

if the roof is overhead mountain it will endlessly collapse and kill people, if when the roof collapses it brings down rubble that means its an overhead mountain. You can also check by using the remove roof tool, as overhead mountain cannot be removed. Or do as flirty frog said and use your mouse

So is the best solution just building some support walls? To continue mining

I just figured I could mine the whole mountain out. Unlike dwarf fortress, there's no way to know how tall a mountain is :(

Whats this dwarf fortress that everyoen is talking about? Is it on steam too?

Very interesting. Alot of respect for these game developers, considering the financial risk they take to pursue their interest.

you cant dig out the mountain :/ youll have to work around it

Yes you need something to support the roof/mountain. you dug a big hole with no support and the Earth above crushed you. I think can have like 13x13 space or so until starts caving in.
Lawlzer Feb 17, 2017 @ 6:37am
You need "supports" every once in a while. I believe every 13x13 area, probably wrong though. If you see collapsed roof, you NEED supports, then you can mine them.

Yeah I got it now, thanks guys. I just didn't realize that after digging out a rock area, that it was more vertical (because you can't dig into the ground or build up ala dwarf fortress, I just assumed the map was purely single-plane 2d)
Bryan=0101 Feb 17, 2017 @ 5:18pm
yeah what happened here is there wasn't any nearby supports to the roof gave away and the rubble started to act as a support keeping the rest of the roof from caving when you mined the rubble it removed the support and caused further collaspe

I learnt the hard way that you cannot make a room bigger than 12x12. I lost two colonists mining rubble from collapsed mountain ceiling. In a more general way, any roof away from a wall by more than 6 tiles will collapse, be it natural or built roof.
