Best wall for defence
So i want to start building a wall to keep all the scum raiding parties out but i was confused when i saw some of the other buildings that were broken down had higher hp then steel walls (sandstone and limestone being what i saw) and i was wondering if i should mine all the lime stone and convert it into walls for my base

Stone is the best material for walls, in order of strength high to low: Granite, Limestone, Sandstone, Slate, Marble.

Stone doesnt burn and has more HP than wood or steel. ( Yes steel burns )

Plasteel would have higher HP than stone, but it is slightly burnable so not a good idea really for walls.

You can click the wall in your structures menu, and choose whatever material type...then when selected you can click the "i" on the black box showing the material to the left.

This will open up the info screen showing you HP and flammability rating.

You can easily make a stonecutters bench and start stone cutting early on to avoid using steel or wood at all...even on flat maps.

Yes i found the stonecutters bench and had people making slate blocks for flooring because there was so much left lying around after i carved out half a mountain to build a base

If the floor is already rough stone, you can smooth it and save materials...smoothed stone is the highest beauty rating for flooring you can get and 100% speed.

Also oddly, wood flooring isnt flammable nor is carpet so feel free to use whatever flooring you like best...but smoothed is best for beauty and for speed they are all 100%.

If I dont have rough stone to smooth, I like white carpet...shows dirt and items laying on it, so its easier to know what needs cleaned and to spot items you're looking for...

Did not know about the smooth stone flooring, is there anyway to change it back or am i just going to have to deal with it

You can remove flooring, its on the flooring menu near the smoothing option on the left.

if you can spare them, Uranium makes the strongest walls. I used them selectively as reinforcement on the thinnest parts of my mountain base. They are usually good to hold sappers until the mortar starts raining on them.

Because it is also fireproof, I use it for key doors on granite walls.

@OP

As mentioned you can use Uranium for certain sections, or doors, but you may want to keep its use limited.

Raid difficulty is based on wealth and its around a 15$ vs 600$ difference per tile.

You'll have to mostly buy it as well from traders or gain late game level research and Deep Mine it to find large enough quantities depending on project size.

Granite is best for walls. Weak sections should be two or three layers thick. If there is no granite just use other stone. It does not matter to much because sappers will make their way trough if not attacked whatever you do and all other attackers go for doors first. I also like to built two walls with an walking area between to irritate attackers going for walls.

In the end you need defence spots to protect yourself and your base and there are lots of possibilities to create such spots however you like to play. I try to keep everything simple and cheap and like to use traps out of steel a lot. But I like to wall in my main area also as soon as possible to keep my people safe. Wood is the fastest way to do this normally.

I wanted to reply to this, in case anyone else was looking for updated information. I made myself this little chart (in HP order):
HP Flammability Work Granite 595 0% 16 Limestone 540 0% 16 Sandstone 490 0% 14 Slate 455 0% 16 Marble 420 0% 15 Steel 350 40% 3 Wood 225 100% 2

Sandstone is wrong, it has a multiplier of 1.4 (steel is 1.0) for HP. It is also the only wall type where the natural wall is weaker than the manmade version.

The answer is Uranium
Astasia Dec 7, 2019 @ 8:02am
Ya, this ancient thread was made back when uranium was a small resource and you could barely get enough of it to build anything. Now a single deep deposit of uranium is usually enough to replace your entire outer wall with it.
