Lovers... How Work?
Greetings, relatively new player here. Started off a new colony with a bit of an experiment that I liked to call "The Love Pyramid" where I started with 1 male colonist and 3 females, just so I could see which was the lucky girl. The sun rises on the second day and my colonists are on break, the doc is lying on the ground outside for some reason, the warden is sitting at the table, and the crafter (the guy) sits down on the opposite side of the table from the warden and the ranger sits next to the guy. The crafter and ranger share a high five and I get a message saying that they are lovers now. I'm not necessarily complaining or anything, I'm just surprised that it happened so fast. I'm not even sure the other girls had much a chance to even do anything, as the warden just watched it happen and the doc is taking it lying down. I did find it interesting, however, that the ranger, the abrasive one, is the one that ended up with the guy.

Day 2 lovers aside, I'm not familiar with how these relationships work yet, so please explain it to me. Does their relationship eventually grow over time? Will they eventually get engaged? Could they possibly break up? I already saw something somewhere about divorse but is that an even that happens in game, though?

I'd like to know how this is to pan out.

Yes, your first lover relationship can happen pretty fast in the beginning.

Everybody in your colony will have an opinion of every other colonist and vice versa (those are two seperate numbers). It is influenced by a lot of factors:
Family relations (a bonus), previous relations (Exlover, Exwife -> a malus, same traits (often a bonus), opposing traits (like teetolaler and chemical interest) a malus, or general traits like beautiful (bonus for all relations) and ugly (malus for all) or dislikes men/women (malus for relations with that gender).
Then there are interactions (will happen when they are passing each other or standing/working in close vicinity to each other): chitchat, deep talks will give temporary bonuses and slighting and insulting will give temporary maluses.

All those factors will be added together to a green or negative red score and then determine the ralationship (friend, lover, rival, enemy). Colonists will only become lovers, if the score is high enough and the wooing attempt by one of the colonists is successful.

But wait there is more!

They can in fact break up or get a divorce, when the relationship deterioates. They can even cheat on each other.
Watch out for the resulting mood (de-)buffs, those can be powerful.

Yeah, and don't forget to get them a double bed.

Also, yeah, it sometimes can be the tiniest bit annoying as to how their relationships go, especially if you're not just surviving, but trying to RP something. Say, had a small taskforce that I made with Prepare Carefully to play some combat scenarios with boning their brains out under mortar fire, just as we've set up camp next to the enemy base to wait till evening.
And, well, considering the game doesn't always check all the ages... Had some rather kinky character pairs.

Lmfao.
In my most recent save, I have a mod that allows you to get leaders, and the leaders give bonuses to the people around them, yet your leaders can be overthrown...
What, why would you care?
Because, my best colonist (not leader), just got proposed to by a prisoner, and she accepted. Overthrown plans?!

Meh. I had a military leader with Abrasive who was ALWAYS socially fighting another pawn (that I didn't picked as this particular leader type) with an equal leadership-related skill and Jealous trait. Once upon a time, in the deep night, a single raider broke out of our brig and went into our camp (open outdoors village) and broke into my Leader Pawn's house while she was asleep.

The next morning, the camp found the Leader dead and her house burnt down by a molotov cocktail that was thrown at the raider by her jealous colleague.

Because no one f*cks with Straid.

No one.

Break his legs and dump him out in the tundra. He must have "changed his mind." Be sure to have the leader step in to offer emotional support (and ♥♥♥♥) while she's vulnerable

I would, but I'm curious how this will end, if he'll join and get married, get married then join, or what :P

I have a young lady, her name is Rhino.
She loved a good smoke along with her wino.
While addicted to dope,
She fell in love and eloped,
But withdrawal effects made the divorce final .... :(

Keep in mind that the colonists you start with are all friends due to having "crashed together", so the first relationship is always pretty quick. It's the newcomers that join throughout the game that have to work for a relationship. More often than not, my 3 starter pawns are all friends and pretty much hate anyone who joins in until much later, it's quite fun to observe.

So my two colonists are lovers now, when will they need a double bed for "mood enhancing activities"? Is the moment they start dating too soon? Because I already built it.

I know what you mean about the kinkiness. Once, I had a 17 year old, relatively attractive colonist fall madly in love with a fat guy who breathed creepily and was exactly twice her age. I mean, I ain't judging, but it was funny.
