Best weapon for leveling up shooting skill?
Anyone know how the XP gained is calculated? is it better the have a high fire rate weapon or a high damage weapon?

The more they shoot over time, the more xp they gain.
Therefore when getting shooting practise by shooting at a safe target (preferably a downed creature with high hp) you should use a high rate of fire and low as possible damage.
For example, if you have a downed Centipede or elephant. Then send in a shooter you want to train up and give them a simple revolver. It will take them a long time to kill the target, but in doing so they will have to fire many shots, and each shot is an xp +.
That's why I like infestations ;)
When you keep a safe distance from them, you have an unending supply of targets and can train your shooters into extremely skilled marksmen.

I think I read somewhere the pistol is. Fastest rate of fire per "burst" so you get the most skill points per second

Try to get your hands on a pistol with low quality. They don't need to actually hit the target to get experience. If you don't have any large targets which are downed to practice on, use something slow and relatively harmless like a turtle or squirrel.

Put down a sleeping spot and fire at it. No need to shoot at a live target.
