Tips for surviving on sea ice? It's insane.
I have no trouble getting started but getting the food production running is nearly impossible when you have to wait forever for a couple crops to grow and then the harvest fails every time. I understand this has something to do with the individual growing skill, but this is very annoying, only on maps where you are forced to use hydroponics.

Build what you need to call traders. Once in a while you should get some who have food with them. Pay extra care to your food consumption, providing only one meal to your pawn per day. If you have gathered the steal and have the right mood get the nutrient paster thingy. Not good put very very productive way to use your crops. Grow only rice, which should allow you to sustain if you don't run out of power. Don't grow too fast, keep your pawns to the minimum until a bulk good traders provide you with all teh resources you need to get a proper hydro farm. Thrumbos should drop by from time to time, use the meat for permican, not for meal. Worse comes to worse, eat raiders corpses.

Starting on an ice sheet is especially hard, I would start nearby, get some animals and research hydroponics before caravaning over to it.

That would take away all the fun of this biome! and that might take you a very long time bud. Getting animals takea food, which takea pawns, which means mood management, which means wealth, which means raids...

It is one of the highest difficulty biomes to start in.

Do some research if you want to succeed in those. Otherwise stick to the parts of the world that don't have the word sea in them.

You're complaining that it's difficult to survive on one of the most difficult to survive terrains? If you don't like the game being so difficult don't pick the hardest biome to build on.

If you want a challenge be prepared for the game, or atleast certain mechanics in it (like temperature, food, etc) to be challenging. Don't pick the hardest scenario then complain that's it too hard.

People...he isn't complaining... he is asking for tips.

Build small, kill raiders and take their stuff, sell stuff to traders. Bulk goods carry building materials.

Disabling solar flare and blight are acceptable when on sea ice, right?
Elpopeyo May 25, 2017 @ 6:22am
No!! Ahah

Solar flare is not a big deal for temperature, provided you are equiped with a minimum quality parka. Biggest impact is on your crops, but with sea ice you need luck, or very very careful planning.. It does take a long time before you get your hands busy on this biome. slow start but very rewarding in my opinion. Don't give up! If you want to make it slightly easier, generate a world on lowest temperature and large map. Most raiders won't even make it to your base before freezing to death.

And for power go for wind turbine. While unstable it pays off long term since sun light is very limited in winter time.

Guys, I was not complaining! I had a great first try already (my last screenshot) and it was hella fun! Maybe I should have chosen the first colonist with better growing skills, so I don't fail harvests. I had to butcher people a lot, as this was my last resort. I pretty much had everything up and running perfectly except for food, which was a real bummer!

Sea ice + tribal start. Have fun without electricity :) Now, that's hard. With electricity it's a lot more tame.

To blueTJ: be prepared to resort to cannibalism :) Those raiders are yummy and a nice source of food.

Not really it is just a bunch of boring waiting

Really? Pray do tell me how you are going to survive on sea ice with a tribal start. No electricity, no parkas, no renewable wood to burn. No steel or components or anything else.

You are entirely reliant on caravans to come, if not, you will die of cold.

Exactly. Even the rich explorer start - unmodified - is crazy hard. And even with double the wood and steel, you'll have a hard time.

If your colonists spends more time sleeping it might slow down the rate of his hunger maybe?

You only have a chance if you use the medieval mod, but in general vanilla ice sheet survival is a matter of time till you get wiped out.

Setting up a smart electric grid is necessary if you can build a wind turbine.

Make it power only heating and it'll probably last you a long time, if you don't build batteries and risk a discharge.

Certain structures generates heat when used, like ovens and such.
