Repairing The Lift
I want to make sure I got this right...

Repairing the lift isn't so much actually repairing the lift, but converting it into a series of platforms and rope ladders, but not quite enough to actually reach the bottom?

Yeah and it costs 15 black diamonds. Inflation is a b1tch.
Yes, that is correct.

It will only get you down about 1/4 of the way. For the rest of it, there are the remnants of broken platforms and bridges. If you use the quick platforms, you can create a spiraling set of walkways down, like giant steps. After placing enough quick platforms you can connect to either ledges or the broken remnants of platforms and bridges. You will spend a lot of time running around ledges, 1/4 to 1/2 the diameter of the shaft in order to find the next that lead down. I kind of recommend going slowly down, setting the platforms as you go.

By the way, there _is_ a broken fast travel stone at the bottom. Hope that's not gonna spoil it for anyone. Bring 1 extra black diamond to repair it, and you'll be able to fast travel back up. The platforms are just a backup in case you fall in and die. and want to recover your body faster. But once you repair that stone, you'll never need to go through that descent ever again.
I really liked the Crystal Decent....I thought it was going to be "build and click and you are down" Instead, I spent about 2 hours exploring, puzzling things out and marveling as I made my way to the bottom

I did build a base in the flooded area map as there was a nice house setup already there. Better than building it at the bottom where that map stone is. Plus the orcs down there drop black diamonds.
Oh I had no problem getting down, but it feels like wood scraps and natural fiber for rope ladders would have been fine w/o any diamonds. Makes me want to try "the hard way" next time, and save my diamonds.

A very LOL at the game design choice moment.

Especially given how they have it all dressed up as restoring the headframe and the pulleys and all that...just to give you half a glorified ladder you could have plopped down with several judiciously placed F keys.

You can always try the Deepest Dark chasms next for your spelunking needs

I definitely felt like I wasted those diamonds. They are worth more than a few rope ladders it would have taken to do that without the repairs.
I'm fairly certain there's nothing stopping you from entirely skipping the"rebuilding" of the lift, and you could just start working your way down. There's a huge underhang though. Really great chance of falling and killing yourself.

i tried - it wouldnt let me build down past a certain point :(
thats a lackluster. i hope they replace it with a proper lift... what a waste of stuff.
you get plenty of Black diamonds unless your playing with low drop rates, i had a stack of 120 by the time we got to the shadow dragon. honestly have i have harder time finding more bats for more farms then i do finding black diamonds.

It is probably cheaper to build rope ladders yourself down there unless the game forces you to fix the lift only to go down.

Yep, almost every hoard i get many black diamond drops in crystal depth.
Having done both sandbox and campaign now, in campaign black diamonds were *tight*, whereas in sandbox we've got a stack of 40 or so still after plopping down map stones anytime we're feeling too lazy to walk somewhere.

I'm not sure how 'tuned' campaign mode is, but it seems like it could use more of it.
