Annoying Ending (SPOILERS!!!)
This entire question, and probably all of the responses to it, are massive SPOILERS for the cut scene at the end of the game.

So, Durin VII, the next Durin, is prophesied in LOTR to be the last Durin. He will clear the orcs out of Moria and reopen Moria for the dwarfs.

In this game, we learn that the Durin line is charged with keeping the shadows at bay.,

So, I cleared the Goblin Men (Orcs) out of the Elven Quarter. I killed Azgog and cleared the Moria Orcs out of the Western Halls and the Mines. I killed their tribal leader and cleared the Deep Orcs out of the Lower Depths. I killed their tribal leader and cleared the Red Eye Orcs out of Darrowdelf. I killed their tribal leader and cleared the scouting parties of the Gundabad Orcs out of the Lower Depths. I killed their tribal leader and cleared the Shadow Orcs out of the angry caverns. Durin was prophesied to do that, and I did it.

I rebuilt Durin's Axe. I recovered the Khazid Stone. I rediscovered how to make Durin's metal. These are the symbols of Durin.

I removed the shadow seals on all the entrances to Durin's Path. I removed the shadow seals on the East and the West gates. I sealed the well of shadows. I built and repaired dozens of Durin's lams throughout Moria. Durin's line is charged with this.

I killed several dragonkind, and the dragon that had claimed and sealed Moria. I reopened Moria, as Durin was foretold to do.

So now that I have done the things Durin was supposed to do, at the end of the game my character hands over the Khaxad Stone to King Thorin for him to examine. He declares it is real, and then he hangs on to it so that he can give it to his son? WTF! His son didn't do anything to help clear Moria. Why is he declared to be Durin instead of me?

Nepotism. It's an ugly practice.

Yep. This is actually what happened at Disney too. I forgot that guys name, but an older CEO put all his family members as the board of trust. Nepotism. At least we got some good movies from that time that came out.

I'm playing a game. A game set in a fantasy world. And I still can't get away from terrible bosses/Kings!

Our character is not part of the royal line of Durin's folk, this is why he passed away the Khazad Stone to King Thorin. Durin VII was said to be a descendant of Thorin III Stonehelm, most likely his son or grandson. The retaking of Moria would happen around year 171 in the Fourth Age, which is after the setting of this game.

But for me, the defeat of the Dragon would have made this retaking possible and prepared the way for Durin VII, and I am pretty sure that your character is praised as a great hero in the sagas of all of the dwarf clans.
