There's an achievement if you can kill up to 50 robots in the dream sequence and that's about it

achievement pops up when you destroy 50 robots in total. And it doesn't have to be this mission.

I'm pretty sure it has to be this mission, but doesn't have to be 50 in one go.

False. It has to be in 1 go. I did racked up at least 50 over the times I played the dream level & it didnt popped up.
Best to do in 1 session which is doable if you use Repeater (& Handcannon)

Not necessarily. You could've gotten the achievement without knowing how it works. Also, it might've been bugged when you got it, but since then was fixed, so now it's working as the description says. I've also 100% the game, yet somehow I'm not so sure I know exactly how it works.
