online needs servers, so that is harder for a free game, unless devs figure an alternative way to pay for it while offering the game for free.
imo, one of the best approaches is what devs from "path of exile" do: the game can be played for free without limitations, but qol improvements and cosmetics are offered for $ to support further development and maintenance.
Skins and sheet like that could be paid...but the player base isn't great yet...so servers up to 1000 people are that expensive either.
And think that steam server aren't that expensive.
Just release a dedicated server tool, players can host or game server companies can host - or people can host listen servers. Same as we did ages ago
