Where the hell is Deathgaze?

I'm curious, have any of you found deathgaze without using the fragment skill? I've been running all around Yaschas Massif 100 AF for 7 hours looking for this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Haven't encountered him once, let alone capture him. I'm legitimately starting to doubt its existence.

Those damn pitterpatters and ahrimans (ahrimen?) have been ticking me off for a while now. Wouldn't be so bad if they at least dropped some worthwhile monster materials >:(

I'm probably better off waiting for the fragment skill that increases rare monster encounter rate, but I'm just confused as to why I've never encountered him naturally at all.

EDIT: I got all 7/7 fragments in the area as well.

Should appear in an area called "The Pass of Paddra", it is possible to get it before having the fragment skill, but I wouldn't recommend doing so - Deathgaze is a SAB pet and it's not a good one.
To me, clearly not worth the effort (:

Thanks for the advice. But afaik, deathgaze is the only source of painga for infusion in the game :(. So unfortunately, I need it for my black chocobo. It looks like the whole area (minus the part past chocolina) is pretty much the Pass of Paddra, and I've been running around it for AGES without success.

Would've just resorted to cheat engine for the crystal, but I can't get that working either...
