Stuck at the end of Chapter 3

There is a gamebreaking bug at the end of Chapter 3 that has completely prevented me from advancing in this game. If you quit during the section in the Void Beyond without picking up the artefacts and opening the gate, you will never be able to return there. I googled and found some people had success going back and opening a gate in a previous area with a wild artefact, but I tried that twice and no success. I'm totally unable to get into Academia because of this bug.

Any solutions? I also emailed SE support on this, but if it's not fixed, I'm sad to say I'll have to get a refund on this game. What a lame way to get stonewalled out.

You need to elaborate on exactly what you mean here. The only collectable items in the void beyond close open gates, neither of which are required to advance the story, and can be collected at a later time in the game.

Chapter 3 is in two parts, which is completely possible to do out of order.

I've completed both Sunleth and Oerba. I cannot access Academia. What I've read online suggests that I needed to go back and open previous gates with wild artefacts, but that hasn't worked either.

At this point, have you completed both trips to the void beyond?

Try going back to Yaschas Massif 01X AF (ensure that the artifact from the restricted area above Hope has been picked up - you need to use Mog to make the artifact appear though), then unlock and pass through the gate in the very south.

Yes, I've unlocked both gates in Massif 1X. Still no dice.

Check which artifacts you have, at the point of Academia 400 AF being available, you should have the below artfiacts:

Giant's Artifact
Eclipse Artifact
Reunion Artifact
Thundering Artifact
Combat Artifact
Restoration Arftifact
Illusionary Artifact

These are the one that you should have picked up during the course of the story to have unlocked Academia 400 AF

Have you unlocked all gates in the Sunleth Waterscape as well? After you defeated the giant Flan in the sunleth waterscape, a mysterious artifact spawns in an area further away from the battle location. You don't receive it automatically and will have had to use mog throw.
