In case anybody wanted to know, this is how it works. In a game with stereo sounds and music, sound comes from left or right, being louder than the other, simulating depth, distance, and direction. The voices however are simulated being offset only by a faint reverb effect (in this game) and the voice itself is flat and placed on a centre audio channel. I'm probably wrong somewhere, and I've simplified it as much as I could, if somebody else desires to elaborate or correct me, feel free, and I hope nobody else has to deal with this problem.
I had the same issue. The problem was that the basic channel setting of my soundcard was 7.1. I have reset normal stereo and it solved the problem.
It was that the voices were sent to the center channel of my 5.1 channel sound.
Either set it to Stereo (2.0 channel) or get your center speaker working :P
EDIT: turns out it was my sound settings. was set to headset not headphones, i guess that makes a difference? really love this game so im glad i can enjoy the memories again on pc :D
I just had this same issue and your fix was what I needed. Much thanks!
Also, I think the game does have sound issues if you are running on a 7.1 sound system configuration.
