I still enjoy the turn-based battles of IV, VI, VII when I replay them but a lot of that is nostalgia too.
I'd actually like them to go back to XII "MMO-style" mechanics. All real-time, no battle screen, Gambits/AI controls to control the fight style of your party.
I know some people hate that style since they feel like they've lost "control," but let's be honest, how much "control" are you really inputting in a generic mob battle when you're just hitting 'Fight' 16 times in a row? Yeah boss battles are different but XII allowed you to micro-manage your battles if you really wanted.
I'll admit, my attention span for turn-based RPGs is pretty low at this stage of life, lol.
It's understandable though, franchise = AAA - Turn based mechanics = niche nowadays
