She is written to be overly positive but then she can be dreadfully serious. She is also the main narrator for the game and it sounds quite good. I've never understood the hatred for her because she's not overwhelmingly bubbly and she has a lot of emotional low points. I'm sure some people truly didn't like her but a lot of times it feels like it's just that internet bandwagon hate thing that tends to latch on to some people, bands, companies or characters where it's "cool" to hate them.

Vanille with english VA (not japanese VA) is like the most annoying FF character ever.
She was voiced by a hot female voice actor that doesn't know (or didn't know at the time) much about games, so yeah.

I hated her since the "uh-oh, then let's run away... ciao!" part. In the beginning of the game, when Vanille is almost killed by a monster when she wandered off like the imbecile she is, I was really rooting for the monster.

Don't really understand the hate toward Vanille. She's a sweet character that actually has a backstory, but just because of her voice people find her annoying? Everyone (except Sazh I guess) is literally a bunch of depressed saps yet she is the character who tries to bring life to the group (despite she herself feeling sad). I don't see anyone talking badly about Snow who pretty much only talks about Serah this, Serah that. And even if you can't stand Vanille for whatever reason, her and Fang's sacrifice at the end should be more than enough to make her a likeable character.

In terms of character, she's at least more interesting than lightning? That has to count for something.
