XIII Linear? XIII-2 Open world?
After checking the Tags people made for XIII and XIII-2 i see a "linear" tag at XIII and an "open world" Tag at XIII-2.
So is XIII really only linear?
And is XIII-2 really Open world.

Becouse im not up for a linear RPG right now, so i whould rather want an open world.
So can i trust those tags or are they wrong?

Yep, but play 13 first

Yep, XIII is linear.
Calling XIII-2 Open world is a bit too much for my taste. It's not that everything is connected and you can go eveywhere, the Areas (or worlds here) are just bigger and give more room to explore. It's good, but just don't expect too much of it. I'm okay with what XIII-2 offers.

XIII is linear until you finish the tutorial, at which point it becomes pseudo-open-world. You are given a massive continent to explore, and can for the most part go wherever and do whatever you want with only the occasional restriction (mostly level-based, as in most open-world games that have level systems).

Can't speak for XIII-2 as I haven't played it yet.

You look at "linear" in the dictionary, and it has a picture of Valkyria Chronicles.

Yes, Valkyria Chronicles is linear with story, but you can do skirmish fights not based on the storyline whenever you want. And you can chose the units you upgrade, weapons you use, and units you want to use for a battle.
I somehow miss the tag "Visual Novel" on Valkyria Chronicles, becouse that is what it is for me.
Its a linear story told by the reporter. And it has additionaly round based battles. Only difference is that you cannot make any choices changing the storyline.

Still its an very good game, i love it.

FF XIII-2 Is a open world experience but XIII is better, also it's not a "tutorial" like everyone says, you will find yourselve in tough battles, hard boss fights and a lot of fast paradigm switching.
People say the game is a tutorial until Chapter 11 because Chapter 11 is when you need to grind for levels, become stronger so you can progress since the game becomes more difficult at this point.
And if you don't play XIII you will get lost in the story

How much chapters does it have?

You didn't complete the game then. You'll spend double, or even triple, the time exploring and completing Gran Pulse as you did going through the tutorial. This game has at minimum 60+ hours of content, but could easily reach hundreds of hours if you're trying to get 100% on it.

It's never actually necessary to grind in order to continue progressing FFXIII's story. The point at which you might feel a desire to grind will vary depending on how rapidly you gain skill at the battle system. Chapter 11 is a common place for this for several reasons (one of which is its length), but it's entirely possible to progress beyond chapter 11 without grinding, or conversely to feel like you need to grind much earlier in the game.
This really sounds weird, a game linear nearly till the last chapter, then on chapter 11 open world? Is there a world to discover or just meaningless grind? Are there towns you can visit, quests you can acept and have to fullfit? I heard evey FF after FF XII is bad, i stoped playing FF after square enix ruined FF XI for all the old players just to get new customers.
So im more carefull with buying any Square Enix game nowdays. Rarely buying them and only if i 100% think that it is worth is, becouse i dislike Square Enix.

There are towns you can visit, but they have no living inhabitants. There are quests to accept, although most of them are part of one large quest grouping and involve combat (similar to Mission Marks in FF12). Is there a world to discover? Sort of, but not on the level of most FF games, let alone a true open-world game.

edit: if you want to skip FFXIII and try FFXIII-2, it's worth noting that the latter does come with a story primer that will tell you the important parts of FFXIII's story. I'm not sure that either of them are the kind of thing you're looking for though.

Hmm sounds like i dont want this game, maybe for the story, but lately i had enough visual novels, so dont need another one.

XIII-2 is also linear, in a way. You have limited paths, but you can choose them on your own and revisit places.
Lozzle Feb 6, 2015 @ 11:38am
13-2 is not open world. It has much larger levels to traverse but still linear paths with pretty back drops. The only one you could even begin to consider as open world is Lightning Returns but even then, it's not like Skyrim or GTA, just really large closed off levels.
