Calling XIII-2 Open world is a bit too much for my taste. It's not that everything is connected and you can go eveywhere, the Areas (or worlds here) are just bigger and give more room to explore. It's good, but just don't expect too much of it. I'm okay with what XIII-2 offers.
Can't speak for XIII-2 as I haven't played it yet.
pretty much, but even XIII is liniar its still an amazing game its in my top 3 FF games ^^
And how is Valkyria Chronicles? is that also liniar?
Yes, Valkyria Chronicles is linear with story, but you can do skirmish fights not based on the storyline whenever you want. And you can chose the units you upgrade, weapons you use, and units you want to use for a battle.
I somehow miss the tag "Visual Novel" on Valkyria Chronicles, becouse that is what it is for me.
Its a linear story told by the reporter. And it has additionaly round based battles. Only difference is that you cannot make any choices changing the storyline.
Still its an very good game, i love it.
People say the game is a tutorial until Chapter 11 because Chapter 11 is when you need to grind for levels, become stronger so you can progress since the game becomes more difficult at this point.
And if you don't play XIII you will get lost in the story
So im more carefull with buying any Square Enix game nowdays. Rarely buying them and only if i 100% think that it is worth is, becouse i dislike Square Enix.
edit: if you want to skip FFXIII and try FFXIII-2, it's worth noting that the latter does come with a story primer that will tell you the important parts of FFXIII's story. I'm not sure that either of them are the kind of thing you're looking for though.
