Chapter 7: why should Fang and Vanille worry about their Focus? [SPOILERS]
==== SPOILERS BELOW ====

I cannot understand the story revealed in chapter 7.

To quote from the datalog:

"When Fang and Vanille awoke from crystal stasis, they had nomemory of their past. Thinking it might give them a hint about their Focus, they decided to attack the Sanctum fal'Cie in Euride Gorge."

If Fang and Vanille had turned to crystal, doesn't that mean they had already finished their Focus? Surely at least Fang knew that she did indeed awake from crystal stasis: she told this to Lightning herself. So, why should they still worry about their Focus, when it is already finished?

To be precise, they do not worry about their Focus, they worry about Vanille's Focus. As you surely noticed, Fang's brand is twisted and not progressing. But Vanille's brand is active like a normal l'Cie brand, which means it will turn her into a Cieth if she doesn't finish her Focus first.

Thanks for the reply, but I still don't get it. Which Focus of Vanille are you talking about?

"Hundreds of years in the past, she (Vanille) and Fang completed their Focus and turned to crystal."
from Datalog>People>Vanille

This one? But it is already completed.

"It is the brand of a cursed l'Cie. Worse, they must now complete their assigned Focus if they are to avoid becoming monstrous Cie'th, ..."
from Datalog>Events>Chapter 3

Or this one? But this one happened after the game started, not in the "Thirteen days".

"... but Vanille's mark was still active."
from Datalog>The Thirteen Days>Day 4: Searching

Just why is her brand active, 9 days before the game started, when supposedly she should not have any Focus? Aarrrrgggghhhhhh

I think this is where the game does not really explain itself well, Fang completed her focus as it is shown, but vanille's focus was suppose to bring ragnarok. However what is not clear is how she became a crystal with Fang, as she did not complete it.

Another thing could be that she might be an exception where she might have kinda like a second task to complete (ragnarok) which means she had a 1st one to complete.

This is just my theory on it since the game does not really explain the plot or the world of the game that well, we are just shoved into it and are just expected to accept the fal'cie, I'Cie, and the whole Pulse thing. Even if there is the 13 days, it is more of a background story of how are heroes came into play, at the end of it all, I'm still not sure whether or not the fal'cie are suppose to be good or bad. And why do they wish for ragnarok? =_="
