Increasing the stats of a few weapons before chapter 11 won't waste too many materials, simply because there aren't that many available and your funds are limited.
To be as efficient as possible, increase the experience multiplier with organic materials, then use a large (within reason) amount of inorganic materials at once to get the maximum amount of experience.
The most important accessory upgrades only become available in chapter 11, particularly the Sprint Shoes and Morale Talisman. By that time you should also have decided on your endgame weapons, so you can go crazy upgrading those.
Okay, so, what about Lightning vs Tifa for top waifu ??
You made a Post about this already @droaan , & my guess would be Tifa & Aerith Gainsborough ( Large Majority of Males would pick Tifa for obvious reasons ).
- Lightning: Axis Blade (because of ATB Charge), but you can't really go wrong with Blazefire Sabre, Lionheart, Gladius or Edged Carbine either.
- Sazh: Deneb Duellers (high MAG stat) or Spica Defenders (longer SYN buff duration)
- Hope: Hawkeye (high MAG stat) or Vidofnir (longer SYN buff duration)
- Snow: Power Circle (high STR stat) or Paladin (if you like SEN)
- Vanille: Pearlwing Staff (high MAG stat) or Belladonna Wand (longer debuff duration)
- Fang: Taming Pole (high STR stat) or Pandoran Spear (longer debuff duration)
You'll be fine either way as long as you get a hang for the combat and figure out which paradigms you're most comfortable with. :)
