Yes, Windows Store version is better
Yes, the newly released Windows Store version is better. Virtuos personally worked on this updated version and of course have been doing the same for the sequels.

The in-game settings menu still says "Final Fantasy XIII" though so it's definitely still the same old version just with additions and improvements.

Hopefully Square Enix allows them to roll out updates to the Steam versions but as seen with Final Fantasy VII it's not certain to happen. The Windows Store version of Final Fantasy VII of course includes high speed mode, no random encounters etc.

From my POV, Steam version is still superior, except we need mods and fixes from the community to get a same performance level as Win. Store version.

From what I gather, Windows Store version:
- Has better vanilla performance - Seems to have better multi-threading support. Correct me if I am wrong on this.
- Has an option to quit the game via the menu, in-game or via Pause & LB+RB to quit the game via the controller.
- Still has heavy compressed FMVs and audio in the FMVs.
- Virtious [If I spelt it right] worked on the build.
- Dried out Grey Controller Prompts are still there.
- Missing Enemy Intel still happens (playing in 4K).
- Star internal animation effect within Battle Results is still broken.
- No Controller Rumble exists within the game.
- Hair Macroblocking still exists.
- Has a bug, if you try ALT+F4 during the Pre-Credits scene / SE screen, the game will state if you want to quit the game. But if you go onto No, the game will be stuck on Paused screen.

Besides the new launcher with language features added, and the ability to quit in-game, I still have the same issues as the steam version. 1440p broken, hair macroblocking, enemy scan info not rendering.

The only thing that seems to be fixed/added is the option to use Japanese text in all versions of the game without mods. Most if not all prior issues still seem to be present. Maybe the build is 64bit and multithreaded, but no sure about that which would also be a slight improvement.

It's a bit of a toss up now because if it is patched, that could break a lot of the mods and fixes for issues which have persisted into the gamepass build.

That is true, at least 1080p works out of the box.

And the game running at 1440p still looks bugged to me:

That sucks, I hope they update the game. At least the game works at 1080p.

What a surprise not really.

Time to update my negative review to mega-negative.

it also crashes on some weird debug console after signing into xbox live... was running FFXIII W10 Store edition at 1080p, shadows 1024/1024, AA 16x. the game just simply refuses to boot. so i have no say on if its better than steam. as i cant get past chapter 1 as snow due to poor performance on steam FFXIII. i don't mod. but i don't want to have to buy a unavailable XSX just for 1 game... last time i played FFXIII was on PS3 and thats a no go for me to return to what is a dead and badly performing system with todays standards.

Tbh idk if it's even worth getting mad over the Steam version (likely) never being updated

The only real things the new version fixed are the fps drops (only somewhat, at that) and the controller bug. It still has the other bugs like the resolution stuff. The difference is that the Steam version can get the Windows Store fixes *plus* other bug fixes via the FF13fix which is like the easiest mod ever to install

And then there's the graphical and FMV enhancements we can get as well

I'd say we still win out. I'd only recommend the new port if someone just really wants an out of the box, working game. But...again the FF13fix is so easy to install idk how much of an advantage that is. It's just a quick copy-paste job
