I am at this boss fight and he always gets me before the timer expires.
Any tips ... farthest i went after 20 tries was 280% ....

You want at least these four paradigms:
SYN/SAB
COM/SAB
COM/RAV
COM/MED

Cast Enfrost on Sazh (and Haste both characters if you know it) and then use Attack-Blitz strings (specifically Attack-Blitz in that order!). You'll have to manually enter this string the first time, after which you can Repeat it. Have Vanille heal when needed. When you don't need healing, have her inflict Debuffs and then use RAV to help Sazh build Gestalt. Tossing the occasional Potion can also help, especially if you equip Sazh with a Doctor's Code.

This strategy takes advantage of the high Commando Gestalt multiplier on the "different command than previous + hit a weakness" conditional chain modifier on up to 7 hits from Sazh's unique Blitz (depending on how far away Brynhildr is). It's not the only way to beat Brynhildr, but it is the most effective.

No, grinding is never necessary. Stats are a lot less important than strategy.
