FINAL FANTASY XIII

Crash/freeze whatever?
The game has never ran perfect due to just being a bad port but since switching GPU's after about 10 or 15 min of playing.
Never had this problem til lately.
Game will just randomly freeze and the sound will lock up and go BRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Haha..
Anyone else run into this issue?
Game runs honestly runs at a constant 60 frames smooth as butter compared to my old card until this happens.

Specs: Ryzen 7 2700
Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB
16gb RAM

Since you're using an AMD GPU, you may want to try Nucleoprotein's OneTweakNG fix: https://github.com/Nucleoprotein/OneTweakNG/releases/tag/0.2 Note that the file must be placed in the same folder with your game exe, not the launcher, so extract dinput8.dll to <Your Steam folder>\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY XIII\white_data\prog\win\bin

I'm having the same problem with the same GPU, PowerColor RX 5700 XT 8GB. I tried the dinput8.dll but the problem persisted. The drivers were installed on a fresh ssd with fresh windows install without any trace of old drivers. Looks like AMD drivers are at fault. Specs:

CPU: Intel i7 6700k
GPU: Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB
OS: Win 10 x64
RAM: 16GB

I've experienced the crash only during battles, specifically just before an attack is struck. The game crashes exactly how OP described it:

Yea, I never came up with a fix for it unfortunately.
I think it's an issue with the 5700 XT drivers. Hopefully it gets fixed eventually.

Also having the same issue, using a very similar set up but with a Ryzen cpu, same GPU. The OneTweakNG fix did not work.

Same problem, no fixes are working. I was really excited to play this, I bought the whole trilogy too.

I'm experiencing the same symptoms, and have the exact same GPU, Radeon RX 5700 XT. Tried OneTweakNG, but no luck.

Also, I'm having the same issue with FFXIII-2, but not Lightning Returns.

Other things you can try:

1) Rather than using OneTweakNG, copy d3d9.dll from C:\Windows\System32 to <Your Steam folder>\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY XIII\white_data\prog\win\bin . If you do that, remove OneTweak's dinput8.dll from the same directory.
2) For ffxiiiimg.exe in <Your Steam folder>\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY XIII\white_data\prog\win\bin, enable Compatibility mode (try Vista, 7 and 8), run as admin and disable full-screen optimizations.
3) For in-game settings in the launcher, lower your shadow resolution to 4096x4096 or lower.
4) In your AMD GPU settings, create a gaming profile for FFXIII if it doesn't exist yet, and in that profile, enable Vsync and Triple Buffering, and set Anti-aliasing to Application-controlled.
5) Close all your overlay-using, recording, streaming or broadcasting background applications, such as MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, FRAPS etc while running the game.
6) Try playing on windowed mode rather than fullscreen.
7) If 6) doesn't work, try enabling true fullscreen in the registry. Here's the instructions: https://steamcommunity.com/app/292120/discussions/0/1630790987577288259/#c3159763879056041501
8) Use a resolution of 1920x1080 or lower, since higher resolutions make the game less stable.
9) Do NOT use Gedosato with FFXIII, since it will make the game crash frequently.

For FFXIII-2, disabling Steam cloud and applying the 4 GB patch usually works. When you disable Steam cloud, you'll need to manually relocate the saves, here's some additional instructions: https://steamcommunity.com/app/292140/discussions/0/1479856439022469454/ The 4 GB patch is located here: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php You'll need to apply it to ffxiii2img.exe located in <Your Steam directory>\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY XIII-2\alba_data\prog\win\bin . Note: use the patch only for FFXIII-2. Don't try it on FFXIII, since it will make your game unable to launch.

The AMD drivers are indeed at fault, specifically their Direct3D 9 implementation.

What worked for me was WineD3D[fdossena.com], a Direct3D to OpenGL wrapper. Download the latest version and place d3d9.dll and wined3d.dll files in the executable directory (ffxiiiiimg.exe) and you should be good to go.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem have antialiasing enabled, so the weird eyelashes will creep you out, but a workaround is a workaround.

Absolute MVP, will definitely try this tomorrow. Can't wait to finally play this. I'm assuming WineD3D could work for FFXIII-2 as well?

No idea, I haven't yet played the sequel, trying to spare myself a headache until I actually finish the first game. But if the issue there is similar then it wouldn't hurt to try.

I tried with multiple different versions for FFXIII but after the launcher, the game window pops up for a second and disappears. Which GPU driver are you running and do you have some specific game profile settings?

EDIT: I can run the game directly through the game executable, but not the launcher. This restricts the game to 720p windowed though

19.10.2, driver settings set to default, but I do run the game 1080p windowed from the launcher. When trying with maximum resolution fullscreen the game indeed doesn't launch.

I got it to work with WineD3D fullscreen at full monitor resolution, the problem was in shadow resolution. For some reason at 4096x4096 the game doesn't launch but at 2048x2048 it does.

Here's step by step to get FFXIII to work with 5700 XT using WineD3D for future reference:
  1. Head over to WineD3D download page[fdossena.com]
  2. Look for "DOWNLOAD: VULKAN"
  3. Download latest version (atm 4.18 staging)
  4. Copy d3d9.dll and wined3d.dll to the same folder where you find ffxiiiimg.exe (white_data/prog/win/bin)
  5. Start FFXIII on Steam
  6. Set shadow resolution to 2048x2048 or lower if that doesn't work
  7. Should work in both windowed and fullscreen, but fullscreen not sure, at least fullscreen works for me

The game normally runs at constant 60fps for me, but with WineD3D it occasionally drops to 30. Running at 3440x1440 resolution.

I am having same issues, constant freezing i am also having frame drops on specific locations ... link here of fps drops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhqpuYyNt9A ...

Also kind of same specs but a Ryzen 3700x will try some of the stuff here hopefully it works.
